<b><font color=’#ffff00′>CC – Turn on subtitles for information, historical facts and description.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>Turin is the capital of the Piedmont region</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>the second largest Italian region by surface area, seventh by number of inhabitants, second by largest number of municipalities, the westernmost in Italy.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>Turin has 846,332 inhabitants (in 2024), the fourth Italian city by number of inhabitants,</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>and is the third economic-productive complex in the country (together with Milan and Genoa it made up the industrial triangle, center of large-scale industrialization of the economy Italian at the end of the 19th century,</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>and during the years of the economic boom) and constitutes one of the major university, artistic, tourist, scientific and cultural centers in Italy.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>In Turin, some historic trams circulate at the weekend. The trams are managed and restored by ATTS, a voluntary association. There are 26 trams in total, of which 14 are operational. Others are being restored.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>A characteristic of Turin is constituted by the porticoes which extend for over 18 km, of which approximately 12 are interconnected.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>The first porticoes dated back to the Middle Ages but it was from the 17th century that the monumental porticoes, still present, began to be built.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>Along the arcades there are many shops, restaurants and cafes with outdoor tables, used book stalls and on weekends second hand and antique markets.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>Turin has a museum system of international level, with over 50 museums present in the city and metropolitan area.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>There are four national museums (Cinema Museum, Automobile Museum, Mountain Museum, Risorgimento Museum) and numerous other museums of national and international importance</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>such as the Egyptian Museum, the Accorsi-Ometto Museum, the Royal Armoury, now included in the Royal Museums, the Museum of Oriental Art, Museum of Astronomy and Planetarium.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>Here begins Via Po, which connects Piazza Castello to Piazza Vittorio Veneto.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>Via Po also has porticoes, present on both sides of the street.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>The street, 30 meters wide (including the porticoes) and 704 meters long, was built to connect the city center with the bridge over the Po (Vittorio Emanuele I Bridge).</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>In Via Po there is the Musy Padre e Figli jewelery shop, considered the oldest jewelery shop in Italy, and the Bourlot bookshop, frequented by illustrious men of letters of the 19th and 20th centuries.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>In the central portion there is also the historic headquarters of the University of Turin, founded in 1404,</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>with the large internal courtyard surrounded by a portico and the busts and statues of the illustrious professors who taught there.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>On the same side, at the back, you can find the headquarters of the Accorsi-Ometto Museum Foundation.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>During the weekends it is easy to meet, under the arcades of Via Po, this friendly group of cheerful and no longer very young musicians.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>Their repertoire is based on traditional Italian music.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>They are exceptional when playing songs of the Neapolitan musical tradition.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>At this moment they are performing the song ‘REGINELLA CAMPAGNOLA’.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>This popular song from Abruzzo region, was composed in 1938 by Eldo Di Lazzaro with lyrics by C. Bruno (pseudonym of Bruno Cherubini).</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>The song was so widespread that it reached the United States where, with the Harold Adamson translation and the title The Woodpecker song, it was recorded among others by Glenn Miller in 1940.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>The Galleria dell’Industria Subalpina (known more simply as the Galleria Subalpina) is a historic building in Turin that houses numerous commercial premises.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>Inside there is also the renowned Turin cinema, ‘Teatro Cinema Nuovo Romano’.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>The gallery is located in the area between Piazza Castello and Piazza Carlo Alberto and is one of the three historic shopping arcades in Turin.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>The structure represents the typical nineteenth-century model of an urban commercial area inspired by the typical Parisian arcades and intended for bourgeois leisure.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>The National University Library was founded in 1720 as the Royal University Library by Vittorio Amedeo II, who unified collections from the library of the University of Turin and from the library of the Dukes of Savoy.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>It was renamed as the National Library in 1872, after Italian unification.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>In 1904 a fire destroyed thousands of books and manuscripts from the library.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>The library was also bombed in December 1942.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>At present time it owns over 763,833 books, 1,095 periodicals and 1,600 incunabula.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>The full name of this historic building is Palazzo dei Principi di Carignano.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>The building is a fine example of Piedmontese baroque architecture.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>It was the historic seat of the Subalpine Parliament (1848-1861) and of the first Parliament of the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1864).</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>On the ground floor, in the so-called "Midnight" apartments, it houses the offices of the regional management of the Piedmont museums, </font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>while on the main floor the national museum of the Italian Risorgimento, reopened,</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>after long restoration and rearrangement works, on 18 March 2011, in occasion of the celebrations for the 150th Anniversary of the Unification of Italy.</font></b> <b><font color=’#ffff00′>Piazza Carignano is one of the historic squares of Turin.
