this is the italian real estate podcast here to help you with the ins and outs and basics of italian real estate presented by italianrealestatelawyers.com and welcome to another edition of the italian real estate podcast presented by italianrealestatelawyers.com we are back here again with italian attorney marco permanian hello there marco how are you doing good how are you i’m doing well thanks today we wanted to talk a bit more about living in italy for those of you who are considering the possibility of purchasing property out here there are various factors that you want to take into consideration and in the last episode of the italian real estate podcast we spoke a bit about where maybe might be worth looking just some of the places that for instance marco might like and also a little bit about transportation and getting around italy and what might be worth considering in that regard but in this episode we wanted to talk a little bit more about the cost of living in italy because that of course is something that can change depending on where you are and this of course is something that i have gone into on my youtube channel youtube.com rafael di furia but i was thinking of course it’s worthwhile having this conversation again on in various platforms because of course with a resource like marco permanian how can you go wrong and i really wanted to hear your take on what might be worth looking out for so i guess there’s probably a few good points to hit on here but a lot of your audience and a lot of your customer base happens to come from the united states so let’s maybe take this on from the perspective of somebody coming from the u.s but comparatively speaking what would it be that a person might be able to expect when it comes to the differences in cost between the united states and italy italy is for sure a less expensive country where to live as a matter of fact you’ll need less money in italy to live than the money that you need in america generally speaking individuals in italy they earn less money per month than individuals in america the cost of living in italy is it’s different depending on the area in which you live of course you need more money if you live in a major city like milan or rome or florence then if the money that you need if you live in a small village in the countryside and also it makes a difference as everybody knows uh between there’s a difference between italy between northern italy and southern italy where the cost of living is much lower in southern italy than northern italy the more you go up from southern italy the more money you need to to be able to live in italy i think that’s actually a really good point i mean for example the cost of living that you might need in a place like naples uh or even going even further south to palermo would be very different than what you might need to get by in a place like bolzano and that’s really we’re talking about polar opposites of the country i mean even i remember speaking to an individual in palermo and she was telling me that like it’s not uncommon for people there to be in that earning range of say 250 to 300 euros in one month and then to have to pay for an apartment that might be say four or five hundred euros in the city so i think that might be an interesting example of what the cost of living and earning potential for some individuals we’re talking about like more less skilled work here we’re talking about somebody maybe sweeping up in a salon for example but of course that’s not that’s not going to be the average that maybe an individual coming from the u.s might be earning but of course it depends on if you’re retiring here or if you actually have to work here the differences in what you might be earning but then in bozano for example i guess what maybe say 2 000 euros could be on the high-ish end and maybe around like 15 would be middle of the of the road yes and i think like to give people a more tangible idea of what the cost of living could be in italy like how much do you spend if you go out to dinner for example it’s not uncommon to spend 20 euros per person so if you’re a couple you end up spending 40 euros to either the restaurant or 50 euros [Music] 25 per person but in america um i mean you probably need 100 per person uh or maybe like 70 per person to eat a good dinner yeah like for that equivalent type of quality i mean that’s one thing that in italy the the cost of living or cost of going out in italy uh another topic that i’ve touched on my youtube channel uh can be quite a bit less of course like i mean they’re the five-star restaurants yes crazy ridiculous places um but even then if we’re in like a small town for example or a small city you can go to one of those higher end restaurants that will have fantastic world star quality but the prices will actually be on that reasonable side um well maybe not like depending on what your budget is i know that for some individuals considering 50 euros per mil would be and i might consider myself one of them yeah but that’s neither here nor there uh but maybe also getting into it a little bit more what is the working life like generally speaking in italy i mean we’re getting a little bit off topic here from the cost of living and what that can entail but that’s something to me that’s been very interesting to see how italians work maybe just as a quick little side note in this discussion what does the average workday look like for an individual maybe in northern italy i do think that one of the major differences between the working life in america versus the one in italy is that people probably in italy people work a little bit less you said it in another video that people in italy work to live and they don’t live to work so they take it easier um people start working at eight or nine in the morning and then normally they have a break a lunch a very long lunch break two or three hours and it gets longer the the more you go towards southern italy where people like stop working at noon and then they they start again at four and so there is this lunch break which can be like shorter or longer and then you work again until seven uh in the night but in america it’s more common for people to not have a lunch break you just or just a minimal lunch break and then you just yes like go till five for example or even i’ve worked for american companies and known for known individuals who will just eat at their desk or eat while they’re doing whatever it is that they’re doing i think it has to do with italian culture and lifestyle because i think it has to do with the fact that italian families they normally eat together they have lunch together and have dinner together so it’s common for people families to [Music] get together for lunch so everybody comes back from work and you eat lunch together and even even kids in school will do this that was something that i found fascinating that kids will actually come home from school and we’re talking about little kids kids in high school university kids everybody comes home for lunch and mom or grandma or whoever or maybe the individual will cook for themselves i was fascinated by that idea because especially having grown up with lunches that were sometimes as short as like 30 minutes or something and i remember even when i was in high school they were discussing if lunch should be 20 or 25 minutes long um but yeah no that idea of even having the time that you can leisurely go home have a nice lunch relax it’s wonderful it’s again a part of this italian lifestyle but getting back to maybe the more uh more of the topic that we are focusing on in this video i guess taking away from that little side note which is important within the context of this discussion what would be maybe say a way that a person could really take control of their cost of living here definitely something to take into consideration when relocating to italy is that the cost of lodging is lower than for example the cost of lodging in america so some people will be surprised and actually i was talking some clients that they thought that you know the listings that they saw online were some sort of scam because the prices are low so low but there are there are actual properties especially in southern italy that don’t cost that much maybe they need renovation works but you can find especially since the crisis the 2008 crisis you can find very nice places maybe that need renovation works but in very nice areas for a very low price for example let’s talk about we can start with raw vehicle where we are right now the cost of an apartment for one person a very nice apartment or decent apartment can be between 350 to 450 euros excluding utility bills and we’re talking about like a one-bedroom apartment or two-bedroom house yes a one one to two bedroom apartment and it’s it’s less common for a family to rent a place but because normally you purchase in italy there is this um thing where families they try to purchase a property that they keep for their whole life so it’s less common for a family for a couple of kids to have to rent but if you wanted to rent a larger property here in rovigo you will be spending five six seven hundred euros for a very nice property and even the cost of properties to to buy a property is very reasonable because you can get a very invading his house even a single house a single family house in in this area for 100 000 150 000 of course if we talk about other cities major cities or more famous areas in italy like tuscany or if you wanted to buy a property in rome or naples maybe in the center of florence the price can go as high as 300 400 500 1 million especially or if you’re buying for example on um a house on the lake with a lake view that can be very expensive especially in a place like como for example yes but if you think that in america like a normal family living in california needs what like 750 000 1 million to buy just normal house it’s a huge difference yeah no i mean especially like i remember seeing listings from la and just like you get a little mini tiny little home and you’re spending ridiculous amounts of money whereas maybe in another part of the country or even in italy that money would be able to buy you almost a mansion [Music] [Laughter] especially in italy i mean in a town like roe vigo or really anywhere i think also another factor that’s worth considering when it comes to the cost of living is that apartment versus single home lifestyle because then in that single home you’ll have to worry about heating on your own and some of these other various factors whereas in a building some of those fees could be shared if we’re talking about heating for example but then you may have other fees on top like that you have to pay for the lights in the hallway or the elevator or what it whatever it may be and if your building doesn’t have an elevator then of course that’s going to be a fee that is much lower but if you’re in a single home then you’ll have all of these costs and they will just be yours there’s no splitting of them between individuals but anyway i think we’ve covered a lot of ground in this video and of course in this video and the last video that we did in the cost of living in italy these are more of overviews and of course we’re not aiming to get all of the costs in one video but we’re talking generally what’s worth looking at and what’s worth considering here but if there’s something that we haven’t covered be sure to let us know down in the comment section below what it is that you would like to know a little bit more about and also you can feel free to get in contact with marco 1. Awesome, Awesome, Awesome!
This is was a very good discussion!
This will help me narrow down my options when looking for a place to call home (once I'm approved for dual citizenship) in Italy.
Thank you for covering this topic!

  2. One of the multiple reasons the CoL is low in Italy is that it's losing its own young citizens due to the lack of good paying, fulfilling jobs: https://youtu.be/O1DSEkAgPj8
This must have an affect on Italian firms willingness to hire foreigners to do jobs that could be filled by their fellow Italians, no?
Have you encountered this in your time in Italy as a working person, Rafael?
