Eating out and eating healthy is tough, but if we’re going to manage diabetes effectively we’ve got to be tougher. Managing diabetes for long term health means managing carbohydrates at meals and snacks to control blood sugar levels, possibly controlling our weight, AND lowering our risk for heart disease and high blood pressure where simply having diabetes more than DOUBLES our risk.
So, limiting calories, carbohydrates, saturated and trans fat and sodium is the goal and for our “Eating Out” series I set 750 calories, 50 grams carbohydrate 5 grams saturated fat, 0 trans fat and 750 milligrams sodium as our upper limits. Can we do it? Can we make a real meal? Yes we can!
So, it’s McDonald’s with your friends, your kids or your grandkids…..what are you going to order. Maybe some of you looked at McDonald’s “nutrition calculator” last week after hearing we were going there. If so, you probably figured out that “World Famous Fries” will wreck your carbohydrate budget, and that McDonald’s (like most restaurants) uses lots of salt.
But, here are two meals that fit within our limits…..each meal includes the side salad with ½ package of Newman’s Own Creamy Southwest Dressing and this package of apple slices.
These sides dishes can pair with either the Hamburger or the iconic Filet-O-Fish, and you can complete your meal with unsweetened tea or a diet soft drink. Always remember….your drink counts…a regular medium coke would add more than 200 calories and 60 grams carbohydrate. For insulin blousing the hamburger meal is 43 grams carbohydrate and the fish meal is 50 grams.
Eating out is tough, but finding a balance is possible. If you MUST HAVE World Famous Fries, get a small order and throw away the entire sandwich bun. That’s a reasonable compromise with the meal’s carbohydrate and sodium. What’s not reasonable is compromising your health by not knowing what you’re eating. Subscribe….it’s free….and stay tuned. Looks like Olive Garden is next.

Toby this was so helpful to both Cheryl and I. Can't wait for Olive Garden because it;s my favorite place to eat. Thanks so much!
I liked the idea of throwing away the bun if you really want the small fries. It makes me feel like I don't have to deprive myself of something I really want, I just have to adjust something else. 😊
McDonald’s you give us money we give you diabetes
Or better still don't go to Mac Donald's !
When I travel by car I like the salads. Also you can eat the egg from an egg mcmuffin. I toss the bread and try to scrape off the fake american cheese. Not much else to eat there.
Better… Go Keto or very low carb and pray.
Its on white bread though
Why would one what to go to McDonald's anyway? It's a terrible place to eat, even if you don't have Diabetes. 50 carbs? Is that for the entire meal? I was 10.1 and now I'm down to 5.2 because I cut out as many carbs from my diet as I can. Some dietician told me to stick with 30-45 carbs per meal, but I swear they're just trying to keep us sick! I don't drink anything now except water because that's the safest thing to drink. Mark Lundy is right. Go keto or as close to keto as you can.
Answer: water 💦
When I am in the mood for McDonald's, I do keep this stuff in mind but to fully enjoy it, unfortunately I've been unable to stay within a reasonable amount of carbs. Of course I'm going to want fries along with a sandwich or some Mcnuggets. I'll at least throw away half of the bun from a sandwich. But I do skip the drink as I have sugar-free options at home. Normally I'll have dessert as well. I usually have four meals like this a week. So a couple of days a week are my "cheat" days. But of course I know it's best to avoid this food all together.
If I do the bread away could have two fish sandwiches
If you’re diabetic then do not go to McDonald’s period
That’s probably why you have diabetes in the first place . Make real home cooked meals
Good question! I run into this issue every day!!
here is a better Idea.. simply do no got Mcdonalds and stay away form fast food.. it not the hard once you get passed a few months.
So a snack is all thanks giving me more and more reason for me to end my life thank you
Great job. Egg Mc Muffin is great for breakfast!
That’s why I go to Burger King
👍👍
Diabetes or no diabetes…fast food is not good for you
If I'm prediabetic can I still drink a McDonald's ice coffee every day? I asked because I was diagnosed with it and still drink an ice coffee every day
Hi I enjoyed going to McDonald’s however, my A1c is H. I hope to go back to my low carb diet. It’s hard I am neither thin or overweight. My blood test results are lately H. It’s so hard to sacrifice sweets and sandwiches. I hope to try the keto. Processed foods are convenient but not good for diabetics. Stay well and safe 👍
i think McDonald's can replace the hamburger by lettuce nowadays
Is easy, keep away from that garbage place, it's a killer
Diet Coke isn’t good lol
