This was one of his earliest concerts held in Italy, a significant event that took place in the early April of 1973. This concert holds particular importance as it came after a series of cancellations the previous year. It was a momentous occasion, showcasing Elton John at the height of his creative prowess, with his albums “Don’t Shoot Me I’m The Only Piano Player”. Despite “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” was in a early creative stage.

The concert in Italy featured an eclectic mix of songs, drawing from Elton John’s recent releases and his upcoming album. The audience was treated to the energetic rhythms of “Crocodile Rock” and the soulful melodies of “Elderberry Wine.” The emotionally charged ballad “Daniel” resonated deeply with the crowd, showcasing Elton’s ability to touch hearts through his poignant lyrics and heartfelt delivery. Notably, two songs from his forthcoming album were performed, namely “Candle In The Wind” and “Love Lies Bleeding.”

One fascinating aspect of the concert was the evolution of the song “Love Lies Bleeding.” Originally intended as a separate composition from “Funeral For a Friend,” it was later fused musically, resulting in the powerful combination we know today. The lyrics underwent significant changes during this period, with lines such as “Everything about this house, have to live and die”, “Oh, it was only about a year ago to this very day” and “Well, it kills me to think of you with another man.”

During the concert, Elton John delivered standout renditions of several fan favorites. “The King Must Die,” an oldie that he brought back for this special occasion, delighted long-time enthusiasts and introduced newer fans to a lesser-known gem from his repertoire. But it was the mesmerizing performance of “Candle In The Wind” that truly captivated the audience.

One fan, Anna, shared her memories of the show, recalling the magical moment when Elton John emerged from the “lion’s den” – the ladder from which the performers ascended onto the stage. Clad in a multicolored cape that cascaded down to his feet and adorned with a magnificent basket of flowers in the shape of an inverted cone on his head, Elton John epitomized the flamboyance and theatricality for which he became renowned. Anna also marveled at his ever-changing glasses, which she described as incredible and colorful, mirroring the vibrant personality that shone through his music and fashion choices.

  2. First ever performance of Love Lies Bleeding , it doesn't even have Funeral For A Friend because it wasn't written yet

  3. Wait. This is April ‘73 concert? GBYBR album wasn’t recorded until May. Yet he plays Love lies Bleeding and Candle in the Wind? So he had already written the songs and practiced with the band? Possible, I suppose. We know he wrote many of the songs for that album three months earlier in Jamaica… so… maybe.

  4. It's crazy how slow 1973 versions of Teacher I Need You are, especially compared to 1982 and 1984 versions
