What do Italians really think about Indonesian food? In this episode, I invite guests to the ‘Laurenceverse’, a virtual dining restaurant in Bali to experience the best of Indonesian cuisine.
Today our guests try Kwetiau Chasio, Roti Srikaya and Kembang Tahu.

In this episode we have Italians in the restaurant and they’ll be trying Kalimantan food which is the Indonesian part of borneo. Today we have my friends Jacobo, Andrea and Fede who unfortunately all come from Italy. This is what everybody says,
Love italian food, hate Italian people. I don’t like Italians but i like the food Guys sorry i’m late. There is traffic everywhere.. Are you guys ready for Kalimantan food? Wait Elly! No what are you doing? The food is for our guests!
Hello guys i’m sorry. I love this country to be honest as you can see from my Batik shirt that matches with the towel. I love Indonesia and i’ve tried a lot of Indonesian food and i’m the biggest fan to be honest. So on the menu today we have three popular dishes from
Kalimantan but before we give out the food, let’s see if our Italian guests know where Kalimantan is.. Kalimantan is here, east Kalimantan actually is here. The new capital of Jakarta will be moving here if i’m not mistaken. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be here Kalimantan is supposed to be around here
Whilst Andrea managed to point to North Maluku – let’s just hope the Italians taste buds are better than their geography. So our first dish today is Kwetiau Chasio a colorful pasta looking dish. This looks really nice, it looks cantik. Can you speak Bahasa? Sedikit.
Delicious, i love it, great combination. meat, pasta, vegetables, everything you need. The composition is perfect. This pasta reminds me of the kind of pasta we have in Italy and it’s almost the same. Similar size, same texture.
If you are to rate this dish out of 10 what would it be? I would give it a 7.5/10. I will give it a seven out of ten. Honestly I give it 10/10. That is our first 10 we’ve ever given on this show. That’s fantastic, 10/10?
Definitely! I’m not sure how we’re going to beat a 10 but but we’ve got kembang tahu. It looks like a Panna Cotta, that’s been there for a while.. That has been gone for a while! It doesn’t look that beautiful, like the one before, but i never judge a
Book for the cover. But it’s kind of questionable.. That’s a very polite way of saying you don’t think it smells very nice. It reminds me of something good in Italy. It’s like Budino – like a sort of porridge. Kind of Panna Cotta also. It’s like a mixture between the two. Yes exactly.
Also it smells of something sweet. There’s something sweet inside. This is sweet for sure. But i like it.. I’m going to mix it a bit and i’m going to try this. There must be some ginger inside.. You’re correct!
First time i try Kalimantan food to be honest. It is really delicious. Honest rating? It is good guys it’s sweet.. Is there some ginger inside? Yes. Flavor wise, it’s delicate.. Delicious? Delicate. How can the taste be delicate? Would you have this for breakfast, instead of your Martabak
With coffee? Martabak with coffee is the best option i have so far. But i wouldn’t mind maybe mixing this with something else because i need a lot of calories in the morning. I don’t know how many calories it
Has but i burn a lot of calories in my day. So it’s good but i’m afraid to if I only had this, then i’ll be starving again in two hours. This one as a dessert wouldn’t really do it’s job. So i will keep my Panna Cotta for desert. I really try to
Experience the different taste and different flavors around Indonesia and Kalimantan has always been one of the most interesting places for me to be honest. That’s why this food deserves the rating I give to be honest. So if you had a
Choice between Kembang Tahu and Panna Cotta which one would you choose? Well that’s two different things.. Panna Cotta we’re used to have as a dessert, so this one as a dessert wouldn’t really do it’s job. So i will keep my Panna Cotta for dessert and I am going to get
This one for breakfast. Rating out of 10? 7 out of 10. Reasonably good.. This is good but also not 10 but 8.5. I’ll give it a 7.5. Roti shrikaya. Green is my favorite color. I have a lot of green
Clothes for instance. In food it is a bit unexpected because in Italy we don’t have many green foods. Only pesto. So it’s gonna be interesting to try this i think. From what i see this is roti, this is bread. I’m pretty sure about it. Looks like Indonesian bread.
Which is nice – like steamed Indonesian bread. That’s how they do it usually. I have no idea how they make this color to be honest. It looks like a dessert.. Again i guess I can try it.
Super tasty! There is jam inside, there’s some sort of fruit give me some jam out of this fruit. I don’t know which jam it is but we should combine this one with the other one. Like what i
Do with Martabak and Cappuccino. Maybe this one? The bread with the jam and then i dip it in the other one? Does it work like this? But before you do that, Give this a rating out of 10. This one
8.5 as well. Maybe even 9/10. This is tasty but you have to choose one. So nine i would say. Nine. The first one was the best I would say, this one second and then the porridge third. I would say i give this as a sweet snack, 9/10
Wow i would say eight. 8/10. What we’re gonna do now is actually bring over the porridge.. This is the first time I think someone has done this in Indonesia but maybe it works. We are going behind the scenes. Let’s do it guys. I think it’s a good option.
This is super good. It’s good! 10/10 Wow i think you just introduced a brand new dish for indonesia. So in last place we have Kembang Tahu, in second place we have Kwetiau Chasio which means the winner of today’s episode is roti kukus srikaya with an incredible
Average rating of 8.6 out of 10. Which puts it joint top of the overall leaderboard alongside Soto ayam! T he bottom two dishes so far are Rujak Cinjur and Nasi Tempong that we both reviewed in last week’s episode. Next time the Benson family will be here trying delicious Indonesian desserts
Including my Dad who’s never tried Indonesian food before. If you would like to feature in an upcoming episode then send me a message on instagram and i’ll see you guys in the laurenceverse very soon
