Hey the Phil Travelers bark here with Walter world and today we’re in posy town on the Amalfi Coast here in Italy and today we want to talk about are some of the tourist traps you’ll probably find when you come here to Italy and since I’m on the Amalfi Coast I might as

Well start with staying and eating on the Amalfi Coast is a total tourist trap because this area is overrun with tourists and this is honestly one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world so they know that they can charge double and give half the level of service and

Half the level of food and half the level of t EAS this because so many tours come here so do PR prepared for that when you do come here so the restaurants will be more the accommodation will be crazy your tours and stuff will cost more when you are

Here now I’m not saying don’t come here cuz this is a gorgeous place to be but just be aware that it’s going to be a bit tourist trappy when you’re here with all the tourists everywhere you’re going to be so maybe to avoid some of the tourist Trappin of here maybe you make

The amfi coast like a day trip if you’re staying in Naples or sento solo but just just be aware of that that one okay now probably one of the most popular tourist traps that you know about when you think of Italy are the gondolas in Venice and those are super

Tourist traps because they are not cheap they are expensive to go on and if you want them to sing it’s probably going to cost you some more but if you’re going to be in Venice and you’ve always wanted to do a gondola well you know what go

Ahead and do it but just realize it kind of is a tourist trap now I know the first two tourist traps are really places you really need to go but ‘s another set of tourist traps I think you need to be aware of when you come here

To Italy and that is any restaurant that’s near a major site that has a menu with lots of pictures in it and like four or five languages look there’s a lot of tourist traps restaurants that are here we actually have a video of 10 ways to know if you’re in a tourist tra

Restaurant in Italy but honestly if you’re ever going around if you’re a place like Al malfi or positan or wherever they’re all kind of tourist trap restaurants but if you’re in cities like Venice or Florence OR Rome anything that’s near on one of the major sites it’s going to be a tourist trap

Restaurant go two or three blocks farther away and you’ll find locals you’ll hear the local language those are the restaurants you should go to also if you see they have salt and pepper on the table already that’s not a place for Italians cuz Italians know that the chef

Already knows what they’re doing now the next Tu trap I have for you is the Leaning Tower of Pisa look so many people want to go there to get their picture holding up the Leaning Tower and I understand that but I’m going to tell

You do not make it a full day trip make it a half day go in get your picture for me actually the baptistry behind the church is actually more beautiful but just know that pza in itself the Lin Tower is a total tourist trap for people

Going there so if you’re going to be in Florence go to Luca instead for your day trip instead of Pisa because yeah sometimes you’re a little disappointed that really all you get is holding up the uh Leaning Tower right now another tourist trap I think you need to avoid

When you are here and you see this a lot less these days you did before is you’re in Rome or by any of the kind of Roman r ruins kind of stuff and you see a gladiator or a Roman soldier a Roman Centurion and they want to get your

Picture with you and you’ll see you’ll be with your kids taking picture yourself and they’ll come up all friendly and be like hey why don’t you take a picture with me and you’re like sure that’d be fun cuz you’re so friendly and then they want you to pay

And like wait I just thought we were a friendly picture Tak he like no no that’s how we make money and then you start to see if you don’t pay them how they pillaged Carthage okay so do be aware of that especially with your kids

Now if you’re up in Verona which is a beautiful town in The veto I do want to let you know that going to Juliet’s balcony and Juliet’s house is kind of a tourist trap because no that’s not Juliet’s house that’s actually a marketing thing from like the 70s that

Really got people going there so don’t think that’s her real thing so in that way some people fall into that trap thinking it really is Juliet’s balcony no no no no no it’s just a really great marketing playy that the Verona people did and when you’re there you know go

And enjoy it cuz it’s one of those things there a lot better stuff to see in Verona than just Juliet’s balcony now another tourist trap I see is when anytime you’re walking around and you see a gelato cart no no no no no we don’t do gelato carts you go to the

Gelataria and you get ice cream there and anytime the ice cream place has like crazy weird flavors and I’m not talking like lavender and Rose cuz that’s actually normal but it’s was like Tutti Frutti bubbly gumy boom yeah that’s a total tourist Tre trappy one but honestly anything gelataria in a kiosk

Don’t do that and actually that’s another thing that kind of Tours trapping is if you’re buying any the major sites and those Kias there selling Waters and snacks there they’re usually at inflated prices so just walk a little farther away you might find a shop that’ll have water a lot cheaper and

Also the gelato and the gelas the actual ones will be so much better so go there you didn’t think I’d forget this one another sign that you might be at a tourist restaurant is that you ever see pasta and meatballs because spaghetti and meatballs isn’t really a thing a lot

Of places in Italy okay so if you see some kind of pasta meatballs or spaghetti meatballs it might be a tourist restaurant in Italy now going back to Venice there is a tourist trp that a lot of people fall for and that is going to do a tour of the Morano

Glass factories now you can go to the Morano Island there’s there’s boats that’ll take you out there no problem but don’t feel like you need to sign up on a tour and benis to make sure that’s part of it cuz it’s about 15 to 20 minutes of actually glass blowing and

Glass making which is cool and then like 2 hours in the gift shop so that gets a little frustrating okay oh another tourist trap I have here anytime you take a tour in a big group listen if you’re doing a tour in Italy always make sure you ask how many people are going

To be in this you know they’ll say oh it’s a semi-private tour that’s usually between 8 and 22 people okay and sometimes a tour might be even more so you’ll see these big groups scor it around and so you don’t get as much of the experience it’s just more of a

Lecture as you walk so make sure you’re asking because sometimes those big tour groups you kind of miss out on too much now another tourist trap and this is another one of those signs you know that hey I shouldn’t be here is you find a place that’s selling cappuccino after

Noon okay because honestly in Italy you don’t put milk in your coffee after about 11:00 so if cappuccino is on the menu you already know it’s a tourist trap another thing I would say is it’s not necessarily a tourist trap it’s just a tourist fact when you do come to Italy

Is if you come in peak season you know June July August prices will be high flights will be booked out trains will be full it was just going to be overwhelming in the prices and so therefore everything almost becomes a tourist trap because people are so excited about coming to Italy but the

Thing is if you come in shoulder season you you come in September October or April May you get still get gray weather and great times and great food and great sits and everything’s still open but you pay a lot less for the hotel rooms for the tickets for the trains for the

Planes all kinds of stuff so try to avoid those Peak Seasons I know sometimes you can’t but that’s one of those things that really the tourist Trapp really comes out at that time now another tourist trap that you might not realize it’s more like a not even

Necessarily a tourist trick it’s just a fact of Italy is if you’re you’re paying more for your coffee to sit down than standing up look sometimes there actually be two prices for your cafe or your espresso just take your espresso standing up and it’s going to be cheaper

Than sitting down because if you’re going to be here for a few weeks and you want to get three or four espressos a day like some people do that extra Euro too can add up over time and tourists don’t realize that happens so just be aware of that like tourist trapping

Nature of you not knowing that you should have your espresso standing up and then I think it’s also important to note if you’re looking for a tourist trap kind of place you’re not sure about a restaurant look on the food that they have if they have food from all over

Italy it’s probably a tourist trap because in Italy people really eat the pastas and the foods from their local area so if you’re eating in vichen or or Verona it’s going to be a very different menu than if you’re here in sento on the Amalfi Coast so make sure you notice

Like hey they have the same stuff I’ve seen all over Italy yeah that might be a sign that it could be a tourist trapped okay so what are some of the tourist traps that you saw when you were here in Italy cuz I know there’s a lot more out

There whether you’re in Milan or or you’re in Lea or body there’s more out there but I thought these are the biggest ones that you should know before you come to Italy cuz honestly most these things are going to happen and you’re not going to be upset because

Italy is fantastic so I’ll say bye or CIA from here on the Amalfi Coast

  1. Pisa is like Bridgeport, CT of Italy. If you ever been to Bridgeport, CT, you know what I am talking about.

  2. Pisa a tourist trap??????
It certainly won't be Florence, it won't be Siena and maybe it won't even be Lucca, but how can you define "tourist trap" an historical city with its medieval/Renaissance/eighteenth/nineteenth century architecture, also founded ++2k years ago by the Etruscans? C'mon, please!! We are talking of "history", we aren't talking of a restaurant that can (or not) be defined a "tourist trap". History is NEVER a trap for tourists!

  3. Love it!! Planning a trip to Paris and Rome with young kids!! Love all the tips!! So glad I found your channel!!!

  4. This is true anywhere you go but pay attention to the change you get back when buying anything. 2009 my wife paid for food or something from a restaurant at the smaller airport in Rome. She paid with a 50 euro bill and got the change back as if it was a 20, the guy kept 30 euro. Of course it was her word vs his, this was the first time she paid for anything in Italy and she got ripped off. Things are probably different now since debit cards are more prevalent, but I still prefer paying with cash.

  5. What you said here correlates with what we saw when we went on our honeymoon in Italy. The only thing I felt really burned by was the Gondolas in Venice. Don't be surprised if you're shelling out $100+ for a 10 minute ride if you don't negotiate. We did also notice that the food facing attractions was overpriced and bad, but walking 2 blocks in any direction unlocked local restaurants that were amazing every time.

  6. I honestly don't get the whole tourist trap thing.
Many things are just tourism infrastructure. You also wouldn't rent a private flat – you go to a hotel. Of course the food in the touristy restaurants won't be as authentic as in a local osteria. But you can understand from the menu what you will eat and you know if it's gonna fit your needs. And you can check the reviews on Google maps which will be mostly in English and not in the local language.
It's fine to use the tourism infrastructure.

  7. 3:26 I too was disappointed when I learned that "Romeo and Juliet's balcony" was NOT the original one from William Shakespeare's tragedy. What a disappointment!!! ☹
A disappointment second only to when, after banging my head against the wall and causing a head injury 🤕, I discovered that "Platform 9 3/4" in London King's Cross railway station is FAKE as it is NOT the original one from the Harry Potter saga.

    What a (painful) disappointment!!!! 🤣🤣🤣

  8. I'm italian and I have to say that the Cappuccino thing is completely overrated.

Yes; Cappuccino in Italy is a morning drink; but there is no problem if you would like to order it in the afternoon.
Italians also drink Cappuccino in the afternoon sometimes, especially in winter.

  9. Love the leaning tower so much? Go to Bologna. You get to take photos of the two of it, and it is even older and more attractive (imo) than the one in Pisa.

Lucca is amazing as well, and I haven't seen any "tourist trap" restaurant on my trip there. The tordelli ragù is to die for

  10. I hear a lot about over tourism and scams in Rome. I'm just starting my travel life. I'm going to Japan in May and wanted to do Italy next, especially Rome. Do you think it's worth it or maybe move it down the list and try other countries first?

  11. Stay away from Florence unless you are a renaissance history buff or an artist. The whole city feels like a over-priced tourist trap. It is very small, crowded and expensive. Long lines at the popular museums is annoying. Yes, the church is beautiful, the museums are good. But, it is not worth it. Venice is better, at least it has enough space to explore, walk around and getting lost only to be able to find your way back in two minutes. Rome is great. I would spend more time in Rome and skip the Florence/Pisa.

  12. It's actually pretty simple. If you are doing something and you are surrounded by tourists, it's part of the trap. And lets' face it, lots of people fly to Italy on vacation as tourists, wanting to be part of the trap. Nobody wanting to live like a local flies there for a week or two on vacation. They don't care about spending the cash and wasting it. They will probably never come back and don't mind if they are being overcharged. It's not even a consideration for them. They go back home to their jobs and forget about it after posting all the selfies.

  13. Ah man, tourist traps! There are so many stacked around all the great places in the world – it's become so out of hand. And with tourist traps, come tourist scams!

  14. If you define Pisa "A tourist trap", that simply mean sthat you do not anything of History. Go back to school , mate.

  15. Went to Rome with family in February several years ago. It was great!! No lines, good weather, cheap hotels. Get a guide and glide into the sights and learn from a certified pro.

  16. "if you don't pay them you'll get to see how they pillaged Carthage" – a serious point about a potential tourist trap but I burst out laughing.
Thank you Mark for seasoning your great practical travel advice with humour.

  17. Love your videos Walter! Just so happens I'll be visiting Italy in a couple of months here so this is gold for me.
