Italian Coast Guard crews conducted a major rescue operation after a ship hit rocks amidst bad weather off the coast of Sant’Antioco, Sunday, December 22.
Twelve people were rescued from the ship by helicopter, aided by two coast guard search and rescue boats.
Due to severe bad weather conditions, the merchant ship ran aground on Saturday evening, but the conditions made an overnight rescue impossible.
All of the crew members on board were rescued and safely brought to the mainland.
Officials are now checking the ship’s condition and monitoring any hydrocarbon spills. (REUTERS)
