Cantina Gorgo’s Brolo: A new take on traditional Italian architecture
The growth of wine tourism in Italy has prompted historic wineries, like Cantina Gorgo in the Custoza area, to enhance their wine tasting spaces. Instead of a conventional enclosed design, our studio was approached to create an open space that integrates wine tasting with the picturesque surroundings. Drawing inspiration from the local vernacular, we proposed a reinterpretation of the traditional Brolo, a hybrid interior-exterior space seen in Veneto’s countryside.

Situated at the rear of the courtyard, the new Brolo is an elongated room with open sides, forming a central void. This void becomes the focal point, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the landscape while enjoying wine. The design, using rough materials like stone, concrete, wood, and iron, emphasizes a connection with the authentic vernacular architecture of the region, blending with sunlight for expressive surfaces.

Unlike contemporary fast-paced life, the Cantina Gorgo’s Brolo provides a deliberate microcosm where visitors can slow down, rediscover the art of observation, and have a fulfilling experience. It reflects a journey through Italy that isn’t about nostalgia but a cultural revival of the “Bel paese.” The project aspires to redefine Italian architecture, breaking free from the picturesque and embracing a modern yet timeless expression that honors the nation’s architectural heritage
