This video is sponsored by Babel my God what we’ve opened it no incredible found it we found it we found it oh my gosh that is right behind there there’s Deborah and Malcolm this is incredible we’re down everybody we’re down whoa what hey we’re in heaven right

Now hey everybody welcome back to my YouTube channel this video is all about the renovation finally of the kitchen here in my little Italian House in Italy and I have a very special guest hello this evening Malcolm interior I like to call you interior designer extraordinaire call me what you like

Okay well there you go um he is brilliant and he’s been helping me throughout this entire project from when it was really a shell and we’ve done the entire upstairs from top to bottom top to bottom and we’re now here in the kitchen probably the biggest renovation

We saved the best for last didn’t we yes yeah no it is the biggest room well it’s in a way it’s the most important room yeah because it’s actually the largest room in the house yeah um and it has to function yes and it has to be beautiful

Yes so we’ve got to marry all those things together so I am cooking I think I’m cooking my last meal or the last meal my last meal your last meal here in the kitchen as you see it right now this is it the next time you see this kitchen

It’s going to be well we hope yeah under construction so if you’re wondering what I’m making I’m making a mushroom risoto I have soaked the mushrooms and I have I’m using the mushroom um juice if you like liquid if you like as my stock so we are going to talk you through we

Have had three crazy days we arrived on Monday tomorrow is Thursday and we’re out of here we’re back to London we haven’t stopped we haven’t stopped so this video is going to show you everything that we did during these three days and the tiles that we chose

The flooring that we chose what we’re doing with the walls the oh my gosh the sink that we chose yes we have done it all and we’re going to tell you all about It we arrived on Monday got in the car drove straight to my favorite flea market IL Picolo sco it’s owned by PG and Deborah and we found something rather extraordinary and literally I was almost like screaming into the street wasn’t I you were but that wasn’t the only reason you

Were screaming because we did have a bit of a bumpy ride on the airplane didn’t we J we certainly did and everybody nervous and yeah I’m a nervous flyer so so your nerves were frayed I I was like oh my gosh we made it here in one piece let’s go buy a

Sink so we did we are heading in to see Deborah and PG we’re trying to find a sink because it is the kitchen renovation it’s starting everybody so excited mid uh we’re December it’s cold but not that cold cuz I don’t have a jacket on but fingerless gloves hat let’s step Inside here we are everybody we found it we found it we found it oh my gosh that is right behind there there’s Deborah and Malcolm this is incredible it’s a original carora marble this is the sink everybody for the kitchen for the kitchen for the kitchen I’ll do a

Closeup wow wow wow wow wow wow wow we found this really lovely sink that we want to use in the kitchen which is uh an antique marble it’s not polished it’s sort of we would say honed so it’s a sort of like a slightly matte finish

Which makes it look sort of older and more original yeah and it’s carara de carara marble oh beautiful really lovely size uh Deborah’s going to get all of this sort of old sort of um cement grout cleared off a little bit of damage on the side

Here but that’s sort of you know the patterner and that’s part of the look that we’re wanting to achieve we don’t want it to look like a modern fitted kitchen no we don’t we want it to look sort of slightly like it’s always been there like the kitchen your granny

Had exactly this is going to work perfectly oh my gosh and the nice thing is is that this is something original from this area yeah using material which is carara which comes from this area so really exciting perfect I bought my little Italian House in 2020 but due to the pandemic it took

Me an entire year to get the keys to my new house so during that 12 month period I said to myself I must learn the Italian language and thanks to Babel one of the top language learning apps in the entire world I’m now at a B2 intermediate level but my New Year’s

Goal is to continue to improve it’s all about the journey right youco uh in Machina makina theme embarking on the new year is a golden opportunity to solidify your language learning goals of course delving into something new particularly a new language can be be challenging so if you

Please do share your thoughts in the comments down below so it doesn’t look brand new which is one of the things that we’re really sort of keen on keeping the aesthetic keep the aesthetic here we don’t want to sort of walk into this kitchen in the sort of wonderful Old Village house yes

And feel that we’ve just put in a really modern new no kitchen we want to have it sort of like an element of sort of walking in and feeling that it’s always been here or you know exactly people might walk in and say oh my granny had a

Kitchen like this oh I love that you know it’s exactly so day two we woke up brighten early had our coffee in the Square as we always and the square can we just pause for lovely Market Day Market day so happy Christmas yeah we loved Market day and it’s all Christmasy and there’s

Music playing out the speakers our first Port of cor was to a floor tile shop yeah exactly in basically villa franka which is a village sort of um I don’t know 30 minutes from here yes on an industrial estate yes exactly done quite a lot of indust

Yeah we’re really keen on them and we found what did we find which an explain well ideally what we would like to use here is real terracotta tiles but they are prohibitively expensive yeah not going to happen also um not the easiest to maintain and look after so for

Example if you were to spill some olive oil on them or some red wine on them you would then have the stain for the rest of your life yeah and it would take a long time to develop a lovely patterer so we went to The Tile Shop

With a really helpful lady oh she was so lovely wasn’t she um and found um some really lovely terra cotta lookie likey tiles yeah um which are made from porcelain which means they’re tough they’re strong really easy to clean mhm um handmade in Italy come in various um

Sizes yeah so what we want to do is to lay the floor in here in um a herring bone pattern yes so rather than doing big square tiles it’ll have sort of more of an original look um we’re very near to carara here and I mean it’s amazing

As you’re traveling along the motorway the number of Stoney yards and manufacturers that you see with just sort of huge machinery and huge slabs of marble so it really is a local product so um that’s what we’re going to use as a worktop aren’t we I mean everybody

Uses it here we met again we met a very nice lady who’s preparing a quote for us um they will have to come and template it because I said every not there’s not one square wall here so they’re going to have to come and template it once the

Kitchen’s installed y but um that was quite encouraging wasn’t it it was it was so exciting and by the way everything is in Italian here we speak and that’s what is yeah is that the so then today cuz the supper is almost ready today it is ready we

Woke up we ah we had a wonderful day today we discovered the Sellar my God what we’ve opened it I call him a that’s right everybody but we don’t know that it’s yours though do we yeah we don’t know but it’s underneath this house and I’ve always there’s Windows all around

Underneath and I’ve always they’re barred up and I’ve always wondered what was underneath there and we went down today and it’s pretty amazing I’ve got it oh my gosh okay we’re down everybody we’re down whoa what oh my look at these look at these big things we could

Take up and use them for lamps What what is this mine knows I mean I’m going to check my key that I have if it if I have if I have access who owns all of this stuff well I don’t know it’s probably been here for a hundred years you need to find after that place I know I do

Because this is under my house yeah I am it’s incredible that’s unbelievable okay I do need to find out about this it’s huge it’s huge we don’t know if it’s ours I got to figure it out I’ve got to ask a lot of questions we’re

Going to open in a nightclub but yeah we were thinking of opening of nightclub or listen I can have I can have a restaurant there now I hope my yeah exactly so that was rather exciting wasn’t it well yeah it was it was really Discovery and then after that we left

And we went to um well we went to a recuperando yeah which is an architectural salvage yard which was phenomenal this marble this Stone wow say hi Malcolm it’s been raining it’s quite cold but we’re looking for tiles for the backsplash if you like of the kitchen so

Looking for some antique tiles and and the colors that we want to go with sort of the kitchen cabinets and we’re going to bring through the colors from the sitting room into the kitchen so get ready for a big adventure here okay we’re in heaven right now I

Wish I could just really represent this well on the camera through this screen it’s hard but this is where we’re going these are the tiles we will be looking at right now and oh my goodness Malcolm how are we ever going to decide this is one that I was definitely interested

In and there’s rows and boxes and rows and boxes all around me but then also the most amazing collection of handmade tiles which was really exciting wasn’t it because we found several that we liked yeah it was hard to choose everybody our ultimate choice but we

Chose them yeah yeah yeah okay we are getting samples home we’ figured it out this is it everybody tiles chosen oh my gosh this is full this is full uh no no the thickness is about the same very similar yeah is like 40 40 Quant sorry

8080 okay Basta Basta per so do you want to show them yes so our is so for the main splashback back splash for American people yep we have these white tiles now what you won’t be able to see easily is that the White Tiles have a sort of a

Luster to them so are some amazing colors underneath there is the sort of most wonderful sort of washed out Aqua sometimes and then also sometimes um a slight sort of purple lavender color underneath I mean it looks when it catches the light it sort of looks like an oyster shell it’s

Beautiful which is sort of really quite pretty so there will be a splashback that runs along the whole run of units yes which will be four tiles High these are they’re 10 cm x 10 cm and then on the top of that we’re going to do a border of these really

Pretty uh dark navy blue tiles oh I love them it’s it’s similar background white background but that will just be a run along the top I was literally jumping for joy and again it’s to sort of pick up on the sort of antique feel of the

House or sort of the old world feel of the house we just want to come in and feel that it’s sort of something that might always have been there yeah rather than sort of trying to make it too new and too modern so hopefully that’s going

To do the trick they’re beautiful no I think they’re they’re so beautiful so speaking of the units the cabinets the drawers we are going to have these handmade they’ll be made in castagna and Chestnut uh and then we will have them painted and we’ve chosen

The color well we have well we found a color that we like yeah so yes ideally we got to use um this uh slightly sage green and the reason for that is that well one we like the color yeah we do like the color well we wouldn’t choose it if we didn’t would

We no that is so a a one of the things about this kitchen is there’s a really wide opening onto the sitting room and what we’re going to do is the wall color that we’ve chosen for the sitting room which is the softest softest gray you can barely

Discern it we will bring that through into this space but one of the colors that we’ve picked up on in the sitting room which you can see on the sofa is this sage green sort of between an aqua and a sage yes and it’s one of the ways

That we can bring color in that then can make a connection between the two spaces because you read the two spaces together you heard it here first so how’s my dinner coming along it’s nearly ready everybody you’re going to see us toast um hopefully it’s good so we also went to the local

Marble oh my gosh yes because the other thing we would like to do having found this wonderful marble sink is to do the whole of the work toop in um carara Marble carara Marble so yeah so I think we’ve kind of covered it haven’t we have

We have we covered everything yes can I have my supper now please you can have your supper now we’re going to toast everybody and a to a new kitchen everybody so AR to this kitchen Vic yeah yeah I know which is I’ve had a lot of memories here

But I’m excited for the new memories to begin with the new kitchen anyway thank you so much everybody just going to do a little cheers salute salute and be sure to subscribe like turn it notifications on I have put my roto recipe in the description down below so be sure to

  1. You are such a worker bee! Malcolm really is quite talented. The two of you let loose on Mapperton and now the Italian house has resulted in great results.

  2. Having all the walls in original brick/stone would be wonderful. Instead of covering some of the exposed bits, remove all the new white stuff instead

  3. Can’t wait to see the new kitchen, loved how you made us feel we were hanging out with you in the room and spoke to us directly in the camera with all the joyous details! Julie your enthusiasm for life is heavenly! 🎉
So Happy for you – I swear I could smell the aromatic risotto cooking. Enjoy always your Malcom collaboration.

  4. I wondered why you never showed us the cantina. You can see the windows around the building. I assumed because it was a mess, but in fact it's a great space with wonderful items.

  5. Look forward to your Kitchen remodel. BUT I really want to know what is inside those 2 trunks you found in the cellar!!!

  6. Nice kitchen plan and color! …. Think about the sink again ….. I Love Carrara! …. the sink is too just too shallow ….the drain is a bath sink size. Seal the Carrara! I Look forward to the final presentation!

  7. Yes that's your cantina!❤ I've heard stories all my life about my great grandmother and the cantina..I think it's a normal part of the home and so what's in there must be considered yours with your property. The wine was stored in the cantina. What a wonderful thing to find!! The treasures in there will be a lovely addition to your home.. Thanks for the trip choosing the gorgeous tiles and sink!

  8. Thank you so much for this channel! I´m from Finland and have been binge watching your programmes for days now an I find them so fascinating and interesting. It´s been a dream of mine always to visit these places and houses and now I can, I´m so happy so many thanks to you Julie for making this a possibility for us all.

  9. Ciao cari, vedo che sara perfetto, avevo un po di dubbio, lovely it's will be amazing, beautiful sink, tiles, floor tile i wish i'v lived in that area😂 i have beautiful house for sure love your entusiasm, sei veramente corragioso 😍 i have dream to have small house in sud di italia and renovate it, this is literally how i speak😂 salute, buon anno ciao😘

  10. Having a hard time visualizing green walls with the stunning blue tiles. I’m sure it will all come together. I agree about backsplash.

  11. I'm not a fan of risotto.. But I can't wait to hear what that basement is all about, it will be awesome for you if it is all a part of your little place..

  12. This is so exciting!! I love the back splash blue tile … I must admit I would not have chosen the sage colour for the cupboards but I’m sure it’ll look amazing when complete!! Can’t wait to see it !! Love your little house! ♥️♥️

  13. Hello Julie, you don’t have to dig up the old kitchen tiles, just put the new tiles on top of the old ones. If you have any doors at ground level, all you have to do is call in a carpenter to ‘shave’ ( shorten ) shorten the length. We’ve done the same in our Home in Italy and it has worked out perfectly ! Less costly and less messy…..good luck.

  14. That kitchen is disgusting..the check, the brick, the stone reveal, the lace, the counters…take a sledhammer to it all. 😂😂

  15. You clearly have a keen eye and your enthusiasm is infectious. But I was wondering if you are having 2nd thoughts about the way the stone walls are peeking through the drywall as you've done it. The curves of the drywall bordering the stone insets have a 60s-70s feel that is kind of disconcerting. I was wondering how the insets would look if they were rectangular and framed with old timber. Just a thought.

  16. I just started watching. Can you please tell me what town you Italian house is? I live in Italy (Castiglione Messer Raimondo (TE) )
Would like to visit the places you found the sink and tiles. Could you please send me the info pm

  17. I painted my thrifted china cabinet sage and antiqued it…. It could fit in your kitchen perfectly!! Love sage !!

  18. ❤ Lunigiana! There is a special place in my heart for Villafranca. Carrera is like another planet! Your sink is perfect. There’s a particular excitement in the hunt and a joyful acquisition of these special items.
The cantina must be part of your property. Surprised it was not mentioned to you. The old cantina is my favorite part of Italian home!

  19. Love the sink, but not sure if it's a good fit for a kitchen. Marble stains, and it seems a bit too shallow for washing dishes. I can't wait to see the renovation! ❤

  20. So exciting! The most important room in the house will be gorgeous! lol Poor Malcolm was starving! Salute!

  21. Have you also painted and added a runner to the stairs leading up to the terrace? Has the window been installed at the foot of the stairs to replace the door?

  22. Great vlog as usual…but why are you so overexited and nervous? It made me feel quite uncomfortable watching.

  23. WOW ! My family is from Fivizzano and most of my ancestors were baptized and wed and + in the church ( the one you see now is heavily restored ) The land has always been very strongly connected to Britain like Aubrey Waterfield, English painter . Their story is narrated in a "A Tuscan Childhood," written by Waterfield's daughter, Kinta Beevor. Even earlier Byron is said to have visited a lover in the area and the poet Labindo’s mausoleum in Fivizzano’s Piazza Marzocco ( the south gate ) Enjoy !
