Are Teslas as great as people say? Model 3 Italian road trip: part 1

With good range and efficiency, charge stop route planning built-in, and the Supercharger network all over the place, is the Tesla Model 3 really the best EV road trip machine?

Having driven to Italy in the Kia e-Niro (https://youtu.be/vSg5EYFk1I8) and Hyundai IONIQ 5 (https://youtu.be/DmO0jwcc0Js) before — wrestling with A Better Route Planner each time — I was keen to try a similar journey with a Tesla which should make life much easier.

It’s a beautiful morning and today we’re going to Italy again this time cuz we did it in the ionic 5 before this time we’re going in a model 3 which we’ve got on a subscription with a company called onto so we’ve only got it for another few weeks

Actually now this is going to be a test to see how much better if it is better how much better a t is doing longdistance Journeys than any other electric car so I think it’ll do quite well now it would have been nice to clean the car so apologies for the car

Looking rubbish but there’s a hose bipe ban at the moment so I can’t I’ve just had to wipe off Bird poo um so the car’s almost ready there’s a few things we have to sort though firstly we got to put Luggage in the back and I’ve got to

Set up all the camera equipment which takes me ages and I’ve got to put in this is a really important thing I’ve got to put a little toll booth tag in there because we didn’t have that when we did it in the ironic 5 and that causes a lot of hassle so

Let’s set that up now okay so what we’ve got is this this is called bip and go and in theory it should be okay for France and Italy but I don’t think it’s going to work for Italy um because someone else has already used a bip and go on this

Car and this car is a subscription car with onto they’ve already used it in Italy so bip and go told me no it can’t can’t work in Italy unfortunately but it should work in France hopefully for Italy we do have something called a telepass which worked absolutely

Brilliantly so at least we got that for Italy anyway it does mean that up here we’re going to have a whole array of different things but anyway let’s set it up so first telepass just has this little sticky tag and we just got to stick that up

There and Di and go is still in this lovely sealed packet which looks very inviting doesn’t it so here’s telepass here’s bip and go same sort of thing really and I’m going to just Mount them oops and there they go and they don’t get in the way of my

The vet so I’m going to go to Abby well hello hello happy well vets then we should get there with 95% as we go through France it’s going to be quite warm but once we get to the mountains it’s probably going to bit a bit cold so

Doing it in advance it’s a standard one and if it’s it’s a repeat one like ours then it was just 69 so that’s amazing because Normal vets make it pay £250 so if if you’re traveling via Euro tunnel you can book it like 100 days in advance that’s what

The vet told me whenever you need it you just book it even yes 100 days in advance and then you just pick it up before driving into Euro tunnel and it’s in fton so very close the standard one is 99b but if it’s a repeat one so if

They’ve done it before and they have all the data already in the database it’s easier for them and so it’s just 69b how amazing is that yes because our normal vet would have charged us 250 and that’s what it costs normally but Abby well vets in foxtone

Amazing you can book it a long time in advance but obviously you have to pick it up before traveling because it’s only valid if you do it 10 days before the patch and I’ve got to take the dog in there right you have to take the dog in there

Cuz they check the micro check this is a repeat procedure so I don’t know what you had to do at the the first time but since it’s just a repeat they do it automatically and they just check the microchip number yeah so that’s all very useful for your EUR

A bit longer than expected because uh I don’t know why but Avo avoid toll was on the map so it sent us all up to L and then down instead of just going direct so that’s a bit annoying so we’re now going to get there about 7:21 but we’re

Finding that the satav is not great cuz it kind of it pounces on you about like it says oh suddenly you’ve got to turn you know it doesn’t give you a good warning like any of the other satnavs I think do I mean Apple Apple Maps I tend to use

Apple Maps a lot and Apple Maps will tell you in you know in 200 yards take the exit 100 here it just says Exit Now what the heck I’m not looking at the map yeah I’m look I’m going on a highway at high speed says exit now so I have to

Quickly exit yeah or I have to look at this map in the middle instead of in the front all the time yeah so really makes you think you know really makes you think that you think a Tesla must be good it must be the best possible um yeah you

Know use a friendly solution that they thought of everything but they didn’t think of anything actually you know this screen in the middle how are you supposed to navigate with that when the vocal help doesn’t even say anything it’s awful the more we are in this car the more I find the awful

Great Apple Maps is better than this I think I don’t know also it always seems to be quite it will zoom in but it often seems to be quite zoomed out yeah so every time I have to zoom in I have to press it five times to go in the in the

Cameras and it should see the signs of0 so even if the satnav isn’t updated you’d think the car would still know that it’s 110 on this road for instance so all this time we’ve been driving normally like manually uh now I’m going to enable autopilot cuz everyone says

Tesla autopilot is great so you push down on the stalk twice on the right stalk so I’m going to do that now and see what happens so it says please keep your hands on the wheel and then I can just take off my foot from the accelerator

And then it just kind of drives itself to whatever the maximum speed is and you can use the right button you can just do that little wheel upwards to just set the maximum speed a little bit more so the road is 110 but I’ve got it set to 112

And in theory it should just drive itself I mean I’ve still got to indicate it’s just like any other creu Advanced cruise control like even in Theo or the onic and it’s got something called Auto steer on so it’s steering itself as you would expect it to in a

Modern car so now it’s just disengaged because the middle line is missing at least the auto steer disengaged but it’s still it’s still doing cruise control so it’s still just going at the speed I set it whether it makes driving any more relaxed I don’t know cuz just I freak

Out that it’s going to make them mistake all the time good okay we got it with 19% and I think it had said 15 or 16 so all good it says we should charge here for 20 minutes okay so you got CCS or a Tesla charger these

Tesla ones are for uh I think Model S and X I think so here ccs and you got this cool little button here if I press that it automatically opens that goes in this see as easy as that no payment cards or anything it just starts charging and it preconditioned it when

We were driving it started preconditioning the charger the battery so there we go it says 15 minutes remaining to to continue trip and that’s the charge speed and you see it’s going a lot 143 KW 144 yeah so anyway that’s nice and fast certainly fast enough for us cuz we need

To get something to eat baby so we get something to eat it so this is an Ibis hotel we we were thinking of eating there but it’s Sunday so the restaurant is closed so there’s a KFC over there so go and eat there but since it’s probably a little bit of a

Walk and we’re lazy we’ll disconnect the Tesla cuz it says that we’ve got enough to continue the trip anyway so we can just disconnect and again it’s is quite cool I think you can just press this and then that stops IT and then I think it’s unlocked is it maybe maybe

All I don’t want to hear another word from you when I go over the limit on the highway that is safe the problem with this car is that you can’t see in front of you what speed you’re going out cuz there’s no PUD and there’s no binnacle there’s no dash you’ve got

The screen on your left and if you’re concentrating in a dark tunnel to stay in your lane and not crash then you’re focused on right in front of you you’re not focused on the scen screen here with this little bit to your left you’re not looking there not all the time anyway so

You got to keep looking with your eyes you know going looking left left all the time and it’s not good not good it’s very easy to go fast in this car and now of course I have Tesla owner saying well I should have been using autopilot and then it would have kept my

Speed but you shouldn’t have to rely on that I it’s stupid there should be a HUD there’s no excuse for it you got plenty of space there there should be a HUD so you can see your speed always what do you think darling you’re going to play Devil’s

Africa and argue against it just cuz well now that I go used to it it doesn’t take um much to look left yeah and see what the speed is it’s you said you’re moing it’s right there you know it’s almost at the front you were moaning about it yesterday it’s almost

Data but the UK is now out the Swiss for example was never in so let’s look at three scenarios but we’ll just read the first because it applies to you your car is ready existed in the UK is that correct yeah while previously you would have received the

Fine at home it should not be the case anymore the cooperation on this point has stopped both ways so don’t expect anything if you get a fine somehow at home and you don’t pay France should not be able to do anything should you decide not to pay you are clear

All throughout Europe well all over the world and that one is not on it yet so I’d be tempted to add it but I don’t know the charge speed and all that sort of geeky stuff so I won’t right we’ve had a really nice breakfast so I’m going to unleash the
