I’m Monique Sultana I’m a wine expert a journalist and I’m thirsty for life this is why no TV where culture job so we’re here in Taormina it’s absolutely beautiful it literally takes your breath away what makes the tuna red we made our way into the cave and I’m very excited

Because it’s so cool in here Frederico what is happening right now in these cases we age the traditional and sparkling wine and a lot of times in the US we don’t think about sparkling wine when we think about wines from Sicily in terms of viticulture and enology season

It’s very complex so I think that the United States consumer as to better learn what the silicon game in agriculture it recently did an interview with some of the top Psalms and I said what do you think is like your hottest wine right now what are you super

Excited about and they all said wines from Etna come together now we drink sure it’s time Catania City here we come Mount Aetna looms over Catania Sicily second-largest city it’s said to have been covered by lava at least 17 times one look at the ashy color of the streets and the buildings here and you’ll see that Edna is everywhere our Sicilian adventure begins in the east Mount Etna is the largest active volcano

In Europe and helps to produce some Assisi’s most sought-after wines right now you know we are in the east side of sicily we climb a mountain we are on the Etna volcano I have to show you the tracer of this volcano our profile looks revenir please follow me yes sir so I’m

Sure you know what happened when Phyllis era arrived in Europe they completely destroy all the vineyards in the world Europe France Portugal Spain and then Italy but when I ride on the eternal Carnival asura found two things the first is the volcanic sand it’s a very

Very thin sand and make not possible for this insect to spread and the second is the altitude so here we have vines that are more or less with the 150 years old and were planted before the arrival of the Philosopher’s in the Europe and obviously they are completely rootstock

Less so and we are very very proud here because we are continuing to grow this kind of vines for history and because it’s a it’s an every change so please enter with me I have to show you this video you first please we’re in the edge

Of ancient lava flows and right smack in the center of pre phlox or vines we’re at video 2 wineries Aetna’s state here in the eastern part of sicily this vineyard it’s a treasure we have here on deitra because at the beginning of the 19th century philosopher incest arrived

From America to Europe and destroyed all the vines it’s interesting cuz it’s almost like Mount Etna is a blessing and a curse right so Edna actually saved these vines because of the soil absolutely absolutely and this is really really particular because we are in the north

Side of the volcano and here we make multimedia culture so it’s completely different kind of viticulture free compared to the west side of Sicily because there we make a hillside MIDI culture and little Highland Mari in viticulture it’s a completely different kind of vineyard and also here we have

Native vines that they are completely different here we have as a red grapes and Merlot mask ELISA and Lou Caputo and for white grapes Kerry contrato and so completely different a game just to give people an idea at home how how fertile this soil is I’m actually

Wearing plastic bags on my shoes to protect them from this dark soil abyss fertile soil it translates into the wine we are talking about a very very young volcanic soil the volcanic soil so it’s very very for style because it’s full of minerals okay another important thing this is a kind

Of volcanic soil makes a very very thin sand and makes possible for the roots of the vines and other fruits to go very very deep to get the fertilization the minerals and to not go in hydro stress because they always find some moisture in the soil so the soil is very fertile

And it’s ideal to grow grapes here another important thing is that this kind of soil during its really dark and during the summer becomes very very odd and helps during the day and the night to have a very very big differences of temperature between between the day and

The night and this is very good for great and I recently did an interview with some of the top Psalms and we were talking about the hottest wines I said what do you think is like your hottest wine right now what are you super excited about and they all said wines

From Etna why do you think people in the United States are so excited about wines from at night by my opinion it’s quite simple they are testing a wine that comes from a production scenario that it is absolutely unique I told me we are making a vita culture on a mountain

But at very low latitude so Aetna it’s a really unique so if someone at home is watching this and they’re having a glass of wine from Aetna what are some of the characteristics that they would know like hey this wine is definitely from Aetna because the wine it’s powerful

It’s compact but at the same time it’s very very Halligan both the red and the white wine and so Edna is the largest active volcano in Europe are you ever afraid it’s going to erupt and lava is gonna come flowing down here unsure yes because I’m I like to say

That on the Etna we are let’s say it’s a guest because the volcano is a very very active it’s always quite always lava flowing during the year and right now we are in the northeast part but the crater dr. Crider right now it’s in the southeast part but tomorrow the volcano

Can decide also to open a new crater here we are it happened during the centuries yeah do you have like a lava flow escape plan or why me what is this yeah yeah the government as a zone lava flow in escape plan but for the for the vineyard

Let’s hope that the volcano decide to remain in this stay this stable situation – let’s possible for us to continue to protect this vineyard this production of inner to produce high quality wine this is what I love about you Frederico you were living on the edge always you’ve got the the other

Winery in favignana Island where it’s a labor of love and now here we’re living on the edge with the volcano that it’s not possible to make good wine without the women without passion I agree so we’re in the pre flux or a vineyard and now we’ve made our way into the

Cellar and I’m pretty excited because you’ve got a real treat for us yeah but I have to first tell you that we had to keep the secret because I don’t want our analogies to know that I’m going okay okay don’t worry we won’t tell anyone no

One to get a watch okay let’s go directly from the barrel okay this is amarillo Maskull si and ninety percent and a little part of Mary Lou Caputo directly from the press locks for a vineyard more than 100 years old medium aged for you oh my gosh

Oh no I’m too scared to try it no and when does this wine go on the market because it’s not available yet correct yes right now for this vintage we are going to put in the market for the April of 2018 we have the previous vintage

That is still in the bottom bottle right now this is the vintage 2015 and is yet in barrel-aging and what made you decide to do this to make this one it’s a let’s say that this one it’s a tribute to niet tradition of winemaking and vine growing so it’s really

Important it’s our everyday age this wine will raise our glass to Edna now we’re in the palmento room Federico talked about the historical significance of this room so this room is very important because during the century according to the tradition in this room usually the farmer will press the grapes

This room we can date back to the 17th century so it is very old and the press we have exists below Massa it’s still fully functional if you if you want after I can show you how we’re pressing the grapes so there were two stage of pressing the first stage of pressing is

Doing by feet by the farmer yeah after this they take those grape and put under the press for a second pressing and this tradition is going and going Tildy we can say 15 years ago yeah yeah yeah so why did they start doing no because after that we imported the

Technology and as you know to make high quality wines technology sometime is needed how cool is this we are trying wines from Aetna in this historic room where they first started pressing wine back in the 1500s absolutely so we’re gonna start with this wine is called a sub J delayed and the

Translation for the consumer of the label it’s the Aetna’s sand because as I told you as we show you the Atma soul is as this very very thin sand that characterized the wine we can say that on the Etna they all the producers were using this kind of press but right now

We have to we have to introduce technology but without erasing the tradition the first thing about this Etna wine is the color it’s very it’s red but it is very brilliant and this is what characterized the Maruyama scalesi from neurological a-z at no sir you can

Feel that it’s a very fresh complex and it’s really hella got you can see the the red fluids and some some part of skin of lemon of orange but remain really really haligan in your mouth you you will feel a very good tannin texture that makes the wine with a good body but

Remains elegant and it’s very very long-lasting just open up a bottle in your transporter to Etna right Travellers from around the world come here to taro Mina to soak up the Sun and get a taste of the Sicilian sweet life it absolutely beautiful it literally takes your breath away very popular tourist to town and I can see why absolutely termina is one of the most

Famous tourist hotspot in Sicily and why not in the world Europe since the 17th century was part of the Grand Tour grunter was a tour made by noble rich people through what the world europe and they arrived in sicily in Taormina now we just left the ancient Greek theater

We can get back the third century before Christ so here you have history you have a lot of a beautiful landscape about what’s really important or Mina is very close to the Etna welcome so biters purpose termina and Etna are quite the same thing It just means amiibo please repo is an aromatic vine At nose you can feel the aromas of the Beebo so you can feel the skin of the orange peach and a lot of really really irked aromatic and interesting aromas a toast a toast choose the Beebo 2gb book we are sitting back a seaside at Grand Hotel Tamayo

Literally giving you a taste of la dolce vita terrazzo d Fellini honest um pan or throw candy cane or zucchini SR Salinger Lisa burrows Adele Edna Edna Rosa so Monica now we are testing a red wine with a fish looks like little bit particular because but isn’t no because

Red tuna is considered red meat the this red wine comes from the eternal volcano and as I told you more than 90% of Marylou Maskull isn’t a little part of never local poacher Noma Scalise is well known because his tenants also round and so elegant so

Again I think by my opinion that it’s a perfect pairing with red tuna and what makes the tuna red the hormones because during the reproduction period the bluefin tuna enters the new Turanian sea and only in that period that the meat will switch the color to red and it’s

Considered the red tonight it’s considered the best to limit a lot of the world maybe you’re sort of my go-to guy about everything Sicily because I could literally ask you any question and you know the answer because I’ll drink to that if there’s something about this area

This part of Sicily that people don’t know that you think they should know what what would it be some sort of insider info I think that the best thing for people is to come here and visit CCD not because there is something that I want to say but the only

Thinks easily and this parcel CCD would be the best thing for for tourists everyone’s welcome to come to your resort and we’re all gonna come and they’re gonna look for you if I’m gonna sit down and do a food and wine pairing with you right give them all this good

Info yeah thank you for being here again and see you next time yes you can’t get rid of me you

  1. Very nice! A great slice of the wine world. We've been there and love those wines. Now we are curious about the wines of Faro -we'll just have to revisit!

  2. Very nice show. My wife and I were in Sicily last summer for 3 weeks but in Trapani, Palermo, Agrigento, Enna. We visited the Donnafugata winery in Trapani and had some of their wines produced from Etna. Excellent wines and I think Sicilian wines are rivaling the ones from Tuscany, Piedmont, and other parts of Italy.
