What I love about living in Italy –

———-

ABOUT ME:

In 2018, I decided I wanted to change my life and relocate to Italy. I didn’t know anyone there, I didn’t speak the language and I had only visited the country twice before. Just eight months after I had made this decision, I packed up my suitcases and moved solo from London to Italy, embarking on my very first Expat experience. On paper it sounds completely bonkers but in reality it was the making of me.

On this channel I serve up a slice of real Italian life, through weekly vlogs and videos. I also share tips on how to navigate life as an Expat in Italy, coping strategies, lessons learnt and my unique insight into life as a Brit in Italy.

Hello welcome to another episode and today I’m sharing with you some food and drink suggestions   which I absolutely recommend that you try if you are planning to visit Italy in the near future or   indeed if you are planning on moving to  Italy because as I’m sure you already know

Italy is a country renowned for its food and  drink and there is a very good reason why   so let’s discover some of those  shall we let’s get into it So the first thing you absolutely have to try  if you’re planning to visit Italy is of course

The coffee this is the country of coffee and Italians are coffee connoisseurs for a very good   reason the coffee here is exceptional and I have to be honest that when I do go back to the U.K and

I go into like the chains like Costa Coffee for example and I order a similar coffee to what I’d   have here in Italy it’s absolutely disgusting so I think once you try the coffee here in Italy   there’s no going back the coffee here is amazing. I must admit obviously coming from London I

Was a bit of a tea drinker I never really  used to drink that much coffee back in the U.K   but now I don’t really touch tea here at all I definitely drink coffee far more – I drink

Three to four espressos every single day and I just find the tea here in Italy is not the same   so if you come from like countries like the U.K where you are very used to a particular tea brand   for example maybe Yorkshire Tea I used to drink a lot of when I lived

Back in London and PG Tips people quite like that as well or Tetley Tea or something like   this you can’t typically get those brands here in Italy and so you can get Twinings   Twinings obviously is the tea endorsed by the Queen so very good tea but that’s kind of it really from

The U.K and typically they drink Lipton Tea here which in my opinion is just not very nice at all   and you can’t really get loose leaf tea here so much either so I was a real tea girl I used to

Have a Tearoom so for this I used to have the loose leaf tea and all of this and you can’t   easily get that here I think maybe I found one Tearoom where they do really good tea especially   here in Salerno but they’re very few and far  between because this is the country of coffee

And the coffee here is exceptional like I have espressos without sugar which you know is a   bit of a shock horror situation because typically Italians love sugar with their coffee but   it’s beautiful like it’s full-bodied it’s rich it’s strong oh my creamy beautiful the

Coffee here is exceptional and you can get it in so many different styles so for example I always   have the typical caffè which is an espresso  but people can go for the lungo which is like   a longer version of an espresso you can still get americano here you can get a cappuccino just

Don’t order it in the afternoon because that’s not a done thing here in Italy cappuccino is   very much a morning coffee but yes there’s so many different variations and of course so many   different brands of coffee here depending on where you are in the country but it’s beautiful and

You absolutely have to try a coffee here and even iced coffee in the summer oh my goodness that’s   amazing as well so yes absolutely the coffee here is phenomenal and it’s definitely the first thing   that I would recommend you try when you step foot in Italy the second thing that I recommend you try

When you come to Italy is our aperitivos  so typically before lunch or before dinner   people will go out for an aperitivo which  is basically like a drink and a little snack   before they begin their main meal and here in Italy which I found to be absolutely incredible

Having come from London with your drink  that you have they will bring you out   sometimes like almost like a first course of food with like little pizza bites nibbles nuts crisps   yes I remember thinking oh my goodness  I’m going to be full up for lunch

The first time I had an aperitivo here but  obviously it depends where you go some bars   give you more some bars give you less but you always get some sort of food with your drink   and sometimes it’s complimentary sometimes you pay a very very small premium for it but

It’s definitely worth doing it’s a very  social event it’s what italians regularly do   and the best drink that I love to have for  my aperitivo is of course an Aperol spritz and a little tip for this that was introduced to me by my boyfriend very sneakily add a little bit

Of vodka into your spritz it is amazing so yes you absolutely have to try that too but typically the   drinks that people have for aperitivos will be a little bit bitter so some people like campari   in terms of having a spritz made of that which is very bitter but it kind of whets your appetite it

Gets you ready for your main course but yes you absolutely have to try an aperitivo when you come   to Italy it is what is famous throughout all the different regions and it’s a very social affair   so the third thing you absolutely have to try if you are coming to Italy is of course pizza this

Is the country of pizza and I honestly have never tasted pizza so good in my entire life and now of   course there are pizzeria chains in the U.K but I mean come on we had Pizza Hut in the U.K which

Was like really greasy fat stodgy pizza and  then we had Pizza Express which was mildly better   and then there was another pizzeria chain  which the name I’ve lost in my mind but that   was up and coming and it was very much focused on sourdough pizzas and to me that was the

Equivalent to an Italian pizza outside of  Italy probably the only one I’ve ever tried   but I have to be honest the pizzas here are  amazing now obviously I live in Campania which is   the region that encompasses Napoli or Naples and so this is the region that’s famous for its pizza

As well as for its buffalo mozzarella amazing but the pizza is incredible here like you can   have all different types you can have fried pizza you can have a folded pizza with all    all the filling and everything inside it’s just  absolutely beautiful and so you absolutely have to

Try pizza and I guarantee you you will never want a frozen pizza ever again when you go back home   I promise you because I’ve never had a frozen pizza for the near three years I’ve lived here

And the cost of pizza here is so cheap as well like I’ve mentioned it in some of my other videos   but you can pay maybe I don’t know three four five euros tops for like a really good pizza so yes   be prepared to have a good lunch or  dinner at very low cost it’s amazing

So the next thing you absolutely have to try  are the local dishes that are specialized in   each region so depending on where you go in Italy every region will have its own typical food pasta   dishes or maybe food items and I definitely  recommend being adventurous and trying these

Because they are amazing so for example in Sicily I was introduced to arancinas now these can also   be called arancino it depends what part of Sicily you go to but I was introduced to them in Palermo   and they are amazing they are fried rice balls and you can have them with a meat and tomato

Filling or or you can have them with ham  and mozzarella and they’re beautiful absolutely   phenomenal I could literally eat them every single day so I’m quite glad I don’t live in Palermo  for this reason but of course you can get  them in other parts of Italy but honestly

The best ones I’ve ever eaten have come from Sicily and I think this is the key really   you can try different regions’ dishes all  across Italy but you always find the original   place of origin is where that dish is  going to taste its best like I think this is

Very very true so yes arancinas are one example here in Naples of course or in Campania of course   we have pizza and there are some pasta dishes that are very typical to this region as well   and of course you know there’s the dolce all the sweets that you can eat that are typical to each

Region so like in Sicily it’s cannoli and various other dolce and here in Campania we have baba   which is like a soft cake which is  soaked in rum and you can have like   chocolate with it or cream or just as it comes or lemon like there’s all different variations of it

But it’s a very typical sweet to this region so  you know it’s amazing if you come to Italy you go   on a complete adventure of food because every region has its own wine every region has its own

Sweets and its own pasta dishes and its own items of food that are specific to that place so you   absolutely need to come here with an open mind and be prepared to try all and everything and you know   the seafood here is amazing as well like I’ve never really eaten seafood properly in the U.K

Until I came here so it’s the first place that  I’ve tried octopus this is the first place that   I’ve had like clams really because I used to  get worried about food poisoning oh such a Brit

And yes there’s so many things that I’ve  tried here for the first time it’s the first country I’ve tried sushi in as well so and I  love it all so I think you know come here with

An open mind and you never know you may end up going home or if you’re planning on living here   living here and and actually having a completely different diet which I think is amazing so yes

  1. Ah, la mozzarella di bufala! Sapevi che l'attore Robert de Niro l'ha scoperta girando un film in Italia ed ora è così ghiotto che ha dichiarato di volare col suo jet privato apposta per venirla a comprare in Italia?

  2. Wait, so coffee in London is horrible, or you didn't use to drink coffee in the UK? Sii coerente signorina!

  3. I'm no expert, but I think "arancini" is just the plural form of the word "arancino" rather than a different name. So you'd eat one "arancino" or several "arancini"… either way they're damn tasty.

  5. The history of coffee in Italy begins in a precise date and place: in 1570 in Venice, when the Paduan Prospero Alpino brought some sacks from the East.
At first the drink was sold in pharmacies, but the high cost of the product made it an attraction especially for the wealthier classes. But this was not a valid reason to stop the success of coffee: in a short time the "coffee shops" increased, so much so that in 1763 there were 218 in Venice.
It is at this moment that coffee begins to become the drink that most of all recalls that sense of conviviality and family that are among the founding values of Italianness.
This is how coffee arrived in all regions of Italy, capturing its unique flavor.

  6. I totally agree with everything you say it is all so delicious. Nobody does it better than the italians in my opinion. Thanks for sharing
