This is Cruise news today with Doug Parker good morning here’s your cruise news for Wednesday December 6 a chilly 35° here in Venice Italy Carnival Cruise Line has quietly raised prices across its specialty dining venuses ranging from1 to $51 per guest a couple examples are the steakhouse going up from $48 to

$49 per person cucha in Gigi’s Asian Kitchen on select ships going from $18 to $24 per person these increases are part of a broader price hike throughout 2023 that have also included Wi-Fi gratuities an increase to the faster to the fund prices and select drink packages the complete list of increases

  1. One more reason now to not pay extra for food. Never ate a a specialty restaurant except for Cucina on the Mardi Gras and Celebration of you can call it a “specialty” on those 2 ships.I did a break down on how much of your cruise fare is allotted for meals and added the price of the steakhouse to the dinner price amount and said “Nope! I’m not paying that.” We’ve been happy enough with the MDR or the buffet…..or Guys Burgers….or…Shaqs Big Chicken….or ……… have a great day. 😋

  2. The cruise ship industry is out of control. I know they are in dept because of covid, but dang it sounds like they are trying to pay it off in a lup some.

  3. My sister lives in Key West. The cruise ship battle is interesting. The pier they use is privately owned and that owner sued to continue their business. Both of the government owned piers are not being used.

  4. We've been on 40 carnival cruises and have never been to specialty dining. The food is excellent that I've already paid for. Stop going and Carnival will stop doing this. It's not rocket science.

  5. Wow chilly Italy. More increases yet they are developing more beaches, docks so forth. Doesn't seem fair. Plus fares going up next year 15%. Enjoy your trip. Thanks for the news today.

  6. Every time I go to the supermarket, I'm shocked at some of the price increases. I love cruising & understand that prices have increased on everything, everywhere. Carnival is not alone in this situation. ❤️🛳️

  7. Good morning Doug. It will be interesting to see the prices on the cruise. I hope you packed warm clothes because Venice is cold.

  8. Last cruise, a year ago, we did specialty dinning three times. This time we’re only going twice. Prices may be going up but my budget isn’t going to change. It’s unfortunate but I know, eventually, my family and I will be priced out of cruising.

  9. Doug, I have a question. before I run away in fear of all these new price increases, I have a question as I see it all the increases are to speciality dining, drink packages, Wi-Fi and things that I do not use when I sail any way so am I correct to feel safe that all the new increases will not effect me as I don't use them?…Thanks for all you guys do for traveler information.

  10. I rarely utilize the up charge options. On trips with extended family, my in-laws will typically "sponsor" one family night at JiJi or Cucina as those options seemed reasonable for a family event. But not so much now. I get it, costs are rising with inflation and the company has a huge outstanding debt from virus times. But 50%? That is jolting. The "problem" is bookings are hot with full ships. Unitl folks stop booking trips and/or stop purchasing upgrades corporate will keep pushing the boundaries. It's free market economics.

  11. Carnival is boldly testing the market. As long as we continue to pay, the charges will continue to increase. It's as much business as it is greed.

  12. We don't ever pay for food. Whatever is included we eat at. NCL included multiple specialty dining based on loyalty level, and we are Platnium, so we enjoy that, but no way are we paying 100.00 for a meal for 2 when we can eat for free.

  13. Cruise lines are out pricing themselves! The big lure to cruising is that it was cheaper than going to an all inclusive resort but now it’s about equal! If this is the cruise line’s new way then I’m out!

  14. I mean, to be fair, prices everywhere on everything has gone up. I'm not sure why we would think the cruise industry isn't feeling that. Did a 2 week land vacation this year, hotels and restaurants have sky rocketed, no nickle and diming, just slammed it, 😂

  15. Very true the people with money will just be the ones in the specialty dinning rooms paying the higher cost. I never pay the price for them anyways. If you look at the bottom of the MDR Menu you can buy a filet mignon steak that the same as the one they serve in the specialty dinning, at half the cost. So save money and if you want a steak in MDR order the steaks or lobsters from that menu. Why pay for the higher price.

  16. Seems like Carnival is the industry leader in price hikes. Well, like georgmaltese (see comment below) you don’t have to use specialty dining if you can’t afford it. Great report.

  17. Only way to get the prices back down to a reasonable level is for them to have empty tables and empty staterooms. As long as people keep paying it, they will keep pushing the envelope.

  18. When you look at inflation due to our incompetent president, you can't blame cruise lines for increasing prices on specialty dining options. I say consider this, the prices that Carnival charges are still MUCH LESS than comparable dining on land. Think $49 per person is too much for the steakhouse with 2 appetizers, main course, 2 sides, and dessert? One steak at a nice land based steakhouse is the same price and doesn't include the appetizers, sides, or dessert. Still a bargain if you want a special dinner while onboard.
