The 100 Point Scoring System (from www.robertparker.com):
96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume.
90 – 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines.
80 – 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws.
70 – 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine.
60 – 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors.
50 – 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable.

Who here uses the App Vivino? Well, I don’t really but according to their website 65.957.761 people do and they have logged close to 100 Million reviews for 17 Million wines.
So in order to find great wines for less than 30$ I have asked my team to search the app to find highly rated wines that are widely available.
They distilled 17 Million reviews down to 7 wines that I am going to taste and review in the search of great bargains – and no – this video is not sponsored by Vivino so you get the usual 100 % unbiased review of their selection on this channel.
Bar the occasional outburst of decadency most of the wines I drink at home are below 30$. You can find delicious wines at this price point that show depth, balance, and intensity.
The prices of the wines in tasting vary depending on your market so I have added all the wines in the description below with a link to wine-searcher so that you can look the prices up for your markets.
Without much further ado – let’s dive into the wines!

  1. Having a couple of hundreds vivino scans/ratings (loving the app BTW) I figured out that there are more types of rating one have to read through.

One with the very affordable wines, rating 4 meana very good price quality ratio. Price level here depends on the local price of the wine (up to 15 euros works for me as a threshold for this rating when buying supermarket wines)

Above that I tend basically have to read et the rating – so 4.0 for 15 most possibly will be of worse quality than 3.7 for 30.

And then you have high-ends which are not really suitable for crowdsourced ratings as on vivino because – crowd (including me) can't affford it 😀

  2. I really enjoy these videos because you're rating wines that may be more accessible – both in availability and price point. It would be nice if you could recommend 5-10 90+ wines in the $30 or less price point and are highly available, and go through a tasting with us. Of the bottles in this video, only 1 is exactly available where I live, and 2 others were offered at one point or another. It's still not as accessible for me (in Canada), but still I'm sure as you review more, more will turn up. Thank you, as always, for sharing with us !

  3. My favourite bottle in the ~$30 CAD price range is Fontanafredda Barolo. It's reliable and performs relatively well consistently. It's nice to have an accessible barolo that's not breaking the bank, especially when you enjoy drinking barolos often.

  4. When rating Vivino wines at first I was just splitting the 100 point rating in half, i.e. 90 pts = 4.5 stars but then I went the Wine Folly method which would equate 90 pts to 4.0 stars. I don't know what's the correct way but in the last example it seems like your 92 points is concurrent with the 4.2 star average rating for the CSM Cab.
PS I was very happy seeing you rated the Carpineto 90 pts which is exactly what I rated it a few months ago. It means that I'm on the right track as a wine master. Thanks for your videos.

  5. To me, I use vivino to chk how general public react to a wine and to see if it’s drinkable but the scoring does have some brand and price bias. I also use Cellartracker which has less brand and price influence but higher score does not mean it’s for my palate, so need to read the descriptors. I use winesearcher for price and expert reviews.

  6. IMO, Vivino is based in the US, and so the scores have a tendency to be higher for American style wines. In other words, wines that are heavily oaked (oak chips, staves, american oaks) tend to get higher scores, and that looks even more true when looking at how bordeaux wines are scored. So maybe it would be very nice if you could prove this kind of hypothesis.

  7. I would be curious to know what you think of the wine selection at stores here in the US, like Trader Joe’s / Costco / Total Wine / Whole Foods…

  8. As a red wine I would say Montresor Amarone della Valpolicella 2018 or 2019. It's a great wine for 30 euros.

  9. My favourite affordable wines: Villebois Touraine sauvignon blanc, Dreissigacker organic trocken (Rheinhessen), Ca'Rugate Soave classico San Michele, Friulano Ronchi di Manzano, Lavignone Pico Maccario Lavignone Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Torre del Falasco Valpolicella Ripasso, Herdade de São Miguel (Alentejo), Domaine Maby La Fermade Lirac. All under 20 euro and some (nearly) half that price.

  10. one of the best below $30 tried recently was Juan Gil 18 meses (blue label). a really really outstanding wine.

  11. Much preferable for me to shop on the back label based on the importer after having tasted a few rather than anything based on general consensus.

  12. What I have noticed with Vivino, and I could be wrong, the score is the average of scores for that wine for ALL vintages. That is why I also look at Cellar Tracker as each vintage is scored separately. Perhaps Konstantin can do a review of Cellar Tracker wines for a specific vintage!

  13. Hey Konstantin, since you like Albariño, few suggestion should you decide to make a video, these are really good ones with different expression from the majority, I live in Spain and I believe this is such an underrated country with excellent wines. Thanks for your content!
