ℹ️ About the Episode:
We had our doubts about going to Venice. Sure, the pictures we saw looked perfect—but these days, filters and AI can make just about everything look perfect. Videos can have selective editing, for that matter, but we really do our best to share a true reflection of our experience. That being said, we’ve learned that experiences can vary greatly due to many factors out of our control.
All of which is a long way of saying that Venice surprised us. When it comes to creating the best possible experience at a new (and popular) destination, we’ve learned to avoid the main attraction as the first stop. In this case, if we’d gone straight to St. Mark’s Square, we might have been turned off by the crowds and touristy nature of the attraction. Instead, we took a casual walk to a more local part of Venice. We chose a restaurant based on a recommendation from the person who checked us into our vacation rental. We did end up visiting St. Mark’s Square later—and we weren’t overly impressed. Luckily, it wasn’t our first impression. We ended up going back late that night for what seemed like a private concert. These experiences can’t be planned. We’ve learned to go with the flow and stay open to exploring with no pressing agenda. This isn’t just our approach in Europe; it has served us well in the States too, from charming East Coast towns to National Parks.

  1. you guys ever play a longer version of Euchre where you have hands where you can slide a card to your partner and bid 12 or go alone and bid 24 points? game to 48. if you ever played that, you would never go back to the light version!

  2. Rent a car in Europe??? Yes! We have rented cars before but this last trip we thought it would be less stressful to take trains. Rome to La Spezia to Lake Como to Lucerne to Basel. So much more stressful trying to make sure we were on the right train at the right time and the right station. Had to change trains in Madrid. There were 36 different tracks of trains!!!! Having a car gave us so much more freedom and with GPS it is a very easy drive. I would do what you did and mix it up. Train because what an experience!! And then car because you have the freedom to go where you want to go. Next, we loved Venice!!! Took an evening tour of local bars for tapas and wine. Got tired of Glass Murano so tried a local wine maker and like you said, get a glass of wine and put your feet in the canal. It was soooooo magical.

  3. Trish looks prettier each season and Marc… more handsome. And you’re both hilarious. And your enthusiasm is so contagious!

We arrived in Venice by bike and stayed on our Bike and Barge boat for three nights. I’m SO glad we went, but like McDonald’s, I’m good for a decade now.

Marc, we’re so sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing. Thoughts and prayers are surrounding our huge hugs. ❤️

  4. I love it at 29:38 when Marc is eating the Mcdonald's burger, doing it all fancy and proper with the pinky finger held aloft. 😂

  5. Venice and the surrounding islands are very enjoyable. Walkinging the neighborhoods and finding the places where the locals eat. Just stay away during the summer months.

  6. Having a hard time watching people go on vacation while people are lost and the world is falling apart there are those that care and those in Venice on vacation

  7. Same shirt for days? Sounds like you're still in camping mode. I wear the same clothes for days when out with the trailer.

  8. I loved Venice. It was enchanting and lovely. I got lost several times and loved it because I always ended up somewhere interesting. It was clean and not smelly. I went back again 3 months later and going back in January 2024. I walked a lot because I'm a walker. Lost a few pounds and didn't mind. I embraced the culture and was not looking for an American experience. I have an apartment near St. Marcos Square and love it. I didn't dine out a lot but shopped and cooked at home. I can catch the train or water taxi to other cities. If you haven't visited please do.😊 Thanks for sharing!
