Thanks!
Love the stank face! Lol! That tells you everything.
I appreciate the tasting for us 'normal ' people just trying to enjoy wine. Most of us can't… or do not want to spend top dollar on an enjoyable wine. I bet a small percentage of people actually spend $50 bucks on wine often. In my circle of friends anyways..
But I hope I'm not drinking weeds …in a basement. 😂😂😂
Without a doubt, the best under $10 wine for me and my dining companion had been the 2021 Chateau Ste Michelle Dry Riesling (not coincidentally, you gave it a 92+ points)! Amazing on its own with varietal characteristics, but it is stellar in food pairings. Excited for the 2022, we were totally disappointed in the completely over-ripe and too sweet vintage… a major bummer considering such a large producer and warm region could be so volatile in quality.
On the other hand, 2022 seemed to make the lighter Pinot Grigios richer and more intense of fruity flavors. Our favorites (managed to get them both under $10) from the prior year were the Art of Earth from Sicily (lovely herbiness) and Voga from Veneto (minerality bordering on too bland). While the increased fruitiness muted the herbie and mineral notes, they greatly improved in overall enjoyment–the 2022 Voga is arguably even better than the 2021 CSM for similar reasons the latter was such a hit!
On the reds side, the 2019 Art of Earth Malbec from Mendoza was a true under $10 gem: fruit, medium+ body, balance, charm, while price-appropriately, unoaked. Terrific on its own, it starred alongside steaks and barbecue! Sadly, the 2020 vintage was awful (weird paint fumes that persisted for quite a while) and the 2021 was just okay. Even inexpensive wines can vary quite a bit!!
My wife and I started on Johannesburg Riesling from Fetzer. It was our “go-to” stay at home date night wine when the kids were little. Then someone told us that if we stick with wine long enough we will opt for more red and drier style wines. Well, that person was partially right. Now we like well-made wines, including Rieslings that have residual sugars but have the acidity to balance. The less expensive wines we enjoy today tend to come from old world sources where the QPR is greater. BTW, we recently had a Pinot Noir from Slovenia that was out of this world!
I didnt know the hand heat trick. Gonna try that next time
the cheap wine I really enjoy to this day is Matua Sauvignon Blanc , I think the value you get for $10 is great. Its the wine I recommend to beginners that havent tried the grape. During the pandemic this was my comfort wine
Many years ago, we used to drink the Fetzer Gewurtztraminer quite a bit at home. That was before we could afford different wines. I will still buy an inexpensive red blend from the grocery store if I am making sangria
Bedankt
I remember starting with mainly Alsace wines. We went there with the family on holiday and wine shopping trips a number of times. My favourite has always been Muscat, which I still like. Even inexpensive ones.
What you mentioned about starting cheap and as you develop your wine knowledge and taste you go more expensive is absolutely true. However, sometimes it's also good to switch back. Either you get surprised with the quality of those less expensive wines, or you get a reminder why it's better to spend just a bit more 😅
I do regular tastings with 2-3 wine (<30€, <15€, <6€) and often the biggest jump is from 6 to 15 and 15 is ok.
Once a 22€ Chablis was nearly indistinguishable from a 6€ pay d’oc Chardonnay… so I guess that Chablis would be a guilty pleasure expansive bottle 😂
But that’s prices in Germany where the average for buying is a bit over 3€.
mans gotta rollie on drinkin barefoot
This video is a revival of my Wine Shopping series. Many of the videos people have requested are already in this playlist… https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFOBi7-hwwSs3U6Ap5q70C7sheqV-eSJ8&si=0Dxaduc3D8_jRf7W
There's a 3€ bottle of Spanish white wine in my local supermarket that I buy and use for cooking. I always have a sip when buying a new cooking wine, out of curiosity. And this wine blew me away for 2/3 of the time it takes to take and swallow a sip, but something at the end (a sort of bitterness) brought the wine back to its low cost reality. Too bad, otherwise I would've found an insane value.
oh wow!
In Germany the average cost of a bottle is a shocking 3,50€😂😓😓
This is a great video, as there is still a bit of lingering snobbery in certain parts of the wine world. I got started drinking smooth Argentine Malbecs and Chilean Merlot 15–20 years ago.
I feel that the expression "supermarket wine" is a bit of a misnomer, IMHO. As yes, you have Yellowtail, Gallo, Barefoot, JP Chenet, Bay Bridge, et all.
But you can also find E.Guigal and many other great wines from small and medium-sized wineries. I generally purchase around 60-70% of our wines at supermarkets/ superstores.
As they can offer a great selection and prices. I have found the same or very similar wines at wine fairs or expos priced higher.😂
But I generally don't go below the 10 US$ or € price point in Asia/Taiwan. Unless it's been discounted or on sale. Maybe a video about Kirkland Signature 's wines could be an interesting subject for a video? Cheers and great content.
loved your facial expression at the 7:34 mark followed up with, "this is awful" comment
Great video ! I think most people in this channel plays this game : look to a under 20 bucks wine that is good and under the radar . Although is perfectly possible to do that either with Spanish , Argentinian, Portuguese and Chilean wines , I find very difficult to find good values in American wines , cause they are 99% sweet chemical wines that disappoint me . But the quest continues ! Cheers !
Off-dry Primitivos and Riesling Kabinett between 5-10€ are my guilty pleasure for a relaxed saturday cold plate dinner. Coca cola type wines. 😅
I just discovered your channel and I'm so glad I did! You deserve more exposure!
