Welcome aboard the Norwegian Viva as we set our sights on Rome! Well, not exactly… In reality, our ship docked over 50 miles away, which translates to over an hour and a half of driving or a bus, walk and train ride. It’s not uncommon for cruise lines to give ports more convenient-sounding names, sometimes even exaggerating their proximity by up to 4 hours!

While there’s no port closer to Rome, there’s a hidden truth the cruise lines don’t readily disclose: there’s a significant extra cost and quite a lengthy journey involved if you wish to explore the actual destination the port is named after.

But fear not, can we still uncover the wonders of Rome with limited time in port without committing to a shore excursion? Join us on this race against the clock as we aim to visit all the major landmarks while ensuring we don’t miss our ship’s departure. And stay tuned for some surprising ways we managed to save money along the way!

  1. “Don’t get your Popes up”. Oh my stars that’s funny! I am going on Viva on the Rome-Lisbon cruise in June 2024. So thrilled to see your reviews!

  2. Rome is a masterpiece. Everywhere you look is so beautiful your mind can’t comprehend it all. ❤

  3. First as usual, great content. Just love you two! If I were younger, I'd most definitely do what you just showed. Being unfamiliar with Europe, train lines and absolutely terrified of missing the ship (ie I think this would take some fun out of the day for me), I'd probably not do this unless it was just for one activity/map stop. Again, though, that's just me. What this really tells me, is that there are some places and this may be one of them, whereby a cruise may not be the best fit – that we should go for a few days to see it all. Thanks for sharing with us!

  4. Quick question. Do you find it annoying when the people in the cabin next to you keep their balcony light on ALL NIGHT. I do.

  5. My family used the train to go from the port to Rome. Excursions from the cruise are way too expensive…

  6. Please can you download the map you used to get about in Rome? What you managed to see was incredible! X

  7. Hey Ben and David, thanks for all the content you put out, it is very helpful and has given us many good ideas on cruising. I know how much work is involved in producing YouTube videos and your content is excellent. Thanks
    Thomas

  8. For the same amount of money you could have an amazing roadtrip where you would actually get to see the country.

  9. On your trevi fountain bit the yellow building to the left of the fountain, you do pan round and show it.. is, the best gelato shop EVER, and it is really cheap…amazingly… Oh and we were told…If you throw a coin in the fountain, you will return..So, guys your going back for a 3rd time 🤭 remember to check out that Gelato shop ….

  10. I was so fortunate to take a trip to Rome in 2017. I went by myself and had a rental apartment for three weeks. It was the best vacation I ever had in my whole life!!! ❤😍👍🤩

  11. I love that we got to meet you two on the shuttle bus back to the ship!! I hope you’re doing well and we hope to run into you again sometime soon!

  12. I just found this channel. I find Ben hilarious with his facial expressions and edgy jokes, he really cracks me up. I think he would be the sort of guy that could cheer anyone up if they were feeling down.

  13. Being Catholic myself, going to the Vatican would be an amazing experience – family friends are studying for the Priesthood at the Irish College there – did you have any problems with the Swiss Guards re dress codes, passports etc, given that the Vatican City State is a separate country from Italy?

  14. May I ask where you gentlemen are from? I detect Northern-ness from you both but I'm not sure if you're both from Yorkshire or if I'm amazingly wrong!

  15. We’ve just come back from the Med and a trip to Rome. Interestingly we didn’t have any issues with anyone trying to sell us stuff or being hassled at all. I didn’t really see anyone however we were in a group so maybe that kept them away. We did an excursion with the ship which I’d rather do as it was a relaxing trip and a cool coach with no worries about missing the ship and being able to relax on the way back as it was a busy day with lots of walking. Our ship included excursions though so cost wasn’t comparable but I do understand it’s personal preference as to ship vs self guided.

  16. My favourite drink when eating out is a dry white wine spritzer. I ask for a large measure of wine,in a tall glace topped up soda and ice. It is a lovely holiday drink garanteed to be cold and very refreshing. Mmm

  17. You guys crack me up!! Initially, your selfies were enthusiastic…..as you went along…..less enthusiasm…..you were probably just getting tired in the heat…..but wonderful tour…..very entertaining. I want to go to Rome now….❤️🤗

  18. It is kind of surprise that you don’t know that, when the cruise line said ROME it means the ship will dock at Civitavecchia, then you take the train to ROME. When the cruise line says Pisa, where the learning tower is, the ship will dock at Levorno then you take the bus/taxi/tour to Pisa. Similarly when the cruise line said Provence that means the ship will dock at Toulon, or Marseille not Provence.

  19. You guys are amazing!!! Thank you You made me feel very smart because I planned our trip to Rome to get on a Princess Cruise ship at the same port.
I took a train from Rome to the port the same as you guys. I will be honest the only thing that we did wrong was we booked the tour in the Vatican but also booked the same day the tour in the tombs and thought we could do them back to back but our first tour ended 30 minutes past the other tour and we weren't able to take it. No one told us Nor warned us and so we were just out….. Thank you! 😁😁😁😁😁
    Feeling smart thank you 😁😁

  20. I’ve been twice to Rome and it’s always amazing 😊
19:33 the name of that ship is as you read “deeadèma” 😅
Your vlogs are always beautiful 🎉
