This film records some of the discussions that took place in late 2022 between Dr Alexandra Gerstein (Curator of Sculpture and Decorative Arts at The Courtauld), the independent ceramics conservator Tiago Oliveira and maiolica scholar Dr Elisa Sani around the final stages of conservation of an Italian ceramic jug in The Courtauld’s collection.
This prestigious jug, decorated with the coat of arms of the powerful Medici family of Florence, was made in the nearby town of Montelupo, in the middle of the 16th century.
‘Italian Maiolica and other Early Modern Ceramics in The Courtauld Gallery’ will be published by Paul Holberton Publishing in Autumn 2023.
