Thank you very much to 23andMe for sponsoring this video. Learning about my ancestry and discovering some of my taste preferences, and comparing them with my Dad, was fascinating. He and I both had a great time meeting and eating. We happen to be traveling in Ghana, and my Dad happened to be in Nairobi, Kenya for a few days having some meetings, so I thought it would be a perfect opportunity, to meet my Dad. Luckily it all worked out smoothly!

Accra, Ghana

Waakye – 8 GHC ($1.80) – Waakye is a popular Ghanaian food / meal, and that’s what we started the day with. You get rice and beans, a number of other starches, and some tomato sauce stew and meats, all piled high into a leaf bowl. It was delicious!

Makola Market – Next we visited Makola Market, the largest and most energetic market in Accra. It’s a must visit, to see the energy and life at the market.

The Accra Arts Center – Finally, we stopped off at the Accra Arts Center to buy a few things before leaving in at night.

Accra to Nairobi – We had a late night flight, and we landed early at sunrise to cool Nairobi!

After checking into a hotel just for 1 night, we took a quick hour nap, and then jumped into a taxi to go meet my Dad who was staying at a guesthouse.

It was great to see my Dad and at the guesthouse we compared our ancestry and our taste preference.

Then we went to go eat some Kenyan food, which was a highlight. Now do you know where I got my love for food from?

Java House coffee – Finally, as you already know, I have a tendency to enjoy caffeine, and so does my Dad. So it was only right to stop for a cup of coffee to finish.

Thank you for watching, and again, a big thank you to https://www.23andme.com/markwiens for sponsoring this video.

  1. Your Dad is a handsome man. Thanks for sharing him with us. Lovely little family .

  2. Love the Market. Can you tell us what is the things we should have for customs- to bring and not to bring on such travels below on next vlog .

  3. Oh, Mark! How I've missed your videos! This is the first one I've seen since 2019! Long time. I used to watch your videos regularly. But when the covid pandemic came, I got out of the habit. Today I saw this video in my feed. I'm so happy I watched it! I see that you've become very popular in the past few years as well! So many comments! Wow! Well, I hope you get to read this one. 😉

This was a very nice video of you, your son (congrats! he's so big & even talking!), your wife, your dad, and your friend. And your hallmark smile and reaction to the food you eat! I've missed that kind of exuberant excitement and sheer joy! We all need more of that, especially in these times.

The food looked so delicious! I have a dear friend from Nigeria and this video made me think of her. It also made me miss all the lovely different kinds of food that I used to try out when I lived in Austin, Tx – there's an Ethiopian restaurant there that has the most amazing food – similar to the Kenyan food and it's eaten the same way as y'all did in your video – but with injera bread instead. Amazing stuff! Now I'm in Portland, OR. Food is good here, but it doesn't match Austin's!

The 23 and me results were also very interesting. It's almost convinced me to give the DNA testing a whirl as well. I love how you & your dad found out how y'all are connected through food and adventure! Very interesting about your Chinese heritage. I've wondered because you look like you have Asian in you. Is your mom Chinese or does she have some in her ancestry? That would be interesting to find out!

I'm also at least half German, but I know that I've a few other ethnicities in my blood, too, that were told to me by my family. I'm curious to see what the DNA results would match what I've been told, and if they'd also pick up on my love of food and different cultures, too. I'm like your dad about the sauces, too! The more sauce, the better!

Thanks so very much for letting us into your life as you have and for all the food adventures! I wish I could travel the world and eat as you do. Maybe one day I will be able to do at least a little traveling. In the meantime, I will live vicariously through you!

    Bon Voyage & Gutes Essen!

  5. African food is so generous. It looks just like home. Wanna eat some one day cause it seems really good. 🥺💖

  6. What I love ❤️ about Mark is that he's just a kind and gentle soul with a warm heart and very compassionate, he makes you notice things that are different from all cultures. And has nothing bad to say about anyone, and enjoys to take his family with him. We all can learn a lot from Mark and his family.

  7. It was wonderful to see your Dad. He seems like a really great guy! He seems really excited about life and food experiences, just like you. Great episode!

  8. I dunno, I'd say Kansas that produces some of the best beef and meat and BBQ outside my beloved state of Texas is doing pretty darn well.

  9. Thank God his dad is eating with his left hand and not that nonsense Mark pulls like hand choice matters to any people not raised in filthe. Who use toilet paper and shower daily and wash their hands all the time. So goofy to pretend to adhere to a culture thats proclivities mean absolutely nothing to ours.

  10. This dish looks delicious but the woman selling the food shouldn't use her teeth to cut the tip of the leaf she should use a scissors.

  11. Dad looks great. They are having a good time together as a family.

Sie verbringen eine schöne Zeit mit Familie und Freunden.
