An ironworker plunged 150 feet into the Detroit River after falling off the Ambassador Bridge that connects Detroit, Michigan, to Canada. Sam Buchanan, who works for a boating company, rushed into action to save the man.

He broke every rib on the left side of his body and fractured his cheekbone, and apparently the impact ripped most of the clothes off his body, rending his entire body purple from the bruising. The woman and the little girl who noticed him lost a close relative 29 years ago due to drowning in the same river. They said the incident with Baker brought them closure, saying that helping him return home to his 4 month old baby allowed them to finally let the memories of their loved one rest.
