Today we started the Via Francigena in Italy in Civita di Bagnoregio and hiked 16km to Montefiascone to rejoin the Via Francigena route.

The route was only on roads, initially very busy but later a side road that did not have much traffic, thank goodness. The route was surprisingly beautiful with farmlands, animals and Microsoft background level views of the green fields and trees.

We could see the mountain city on Montefiascone and it’s impressive cathedral from more than 10kms away.

As we climbed steeply into Montefiascone we popped into the Church of San Flaviano to visit the grave of Johannes Defuk. According to the story, a German bishop named Johann Fugger, or Johannes de Fugger, was traveling to Rome in the 12th century. The bishop, known for his fondness for wine, sent a servant ahead to find the best wines along the journey. The servant was instructed to mark the doors of inns with the word “Est” (“It is” in Latin) to indicate the quality of the wine.

When the servant arrived in Montefiascone and tasted the local wine, he was so impressed by its exceptional quality that he marked the inn’s door with the phrase “Est! Est!! Est!!!” to emphasize its excellence. The bishop was delighted with the recommendation and made his way to Montefiascone, where he enjoyed the wine so much that he stayed there until his passing.

Since then, the name “Est! Est!! Est!!!” has been associated with the region’s wine, gaining fame and popularity throughout the centuries. The legend has become part of Montefiascone’s history and adds to the allure of the wine, making it a cherished part of Italian winemaking tradition.

Today, “Est! Est!! Est!!!” remains a respected and sought-after wine, and the town of Montefiascone continues to celebrate its historical connection to this captivating wine legend.

Montefiascone is a historic town located in the province of Viterbo, Italy. Its origins date back to ancient times, with evidence of Etruscan settlements in the area. In the Middle Ages, the town became a significant stronghold and was ruled by various noble families.

One of the town’s notable landmarks is the Rocca dei Papi, a fortress that served as a residence for several popes during the 13th and 14th centuries. It was a symbol of the town’s political and strategic importance during that time.

Today, Montefiascone is still renowned for its vineyards and winemaking tradition.

Over the centuries, the town saw several changes in rulership and underwent periods of prosperity and decline. Today, Montefiascone stands as a charming destination for visitors, offering a glimpse into its rich history, picturesque architecture, and scenic beauty.
