Thank you for the great information! We are going to be traveling to France with family in a large group, 8 adults and 7 kids (age range 5-16). How is seating for large groups? Should we plan to split up or can most cafés/bistros/restaurants accommodate a big party?
You forgot the brasserie..
You guys seem to enjoy your life in Paris .
Perfect description of the french parisian way of eating….love it….
Excellent content and editing!
I was born in Paris…but live in oversea. I still nervous every times I go back. Lol. Uber eat works there too right…Mdr
London is much better place to visit !!!
Helpful video, but the comments on tips here contradict what was said in their video on restaurant etiquette. In that video, they said that tax and service are included in menu prices, but not tips–extra gratuities above and beyond the service charge, for unusually good service. Here, they say that tips are included.
I have read comments from people in other parts of France on other videos who said that Parisians were in fact rude and not as friendly to tourists as people in the rest of France. Maybe because they have so many visitors there. And everyone was complaining about Americans being loud, rude, etc. Could be just on-line nonsense, or perhaps not? But, not being a rude person myself, I would definitely give people a smile and a "bonjour!"
The story I heard about the origin of bistro/bistrot is that it originated with the Russian soldiers occupying Paris after the fall of Napoleon, but looking it up, it appears to be a false etymology.
New subscriber! Love your videos. Have you ever been to Le E'curie? (May well be spelling it wrong) It is closed now, it was near the Sorbonne.. soooo unusual and wonderful! I cried last time I was in Paris and discovered it had closed….
Going to France looks scary and complicated. Guess it's better to go to a English speaking country instead
Thank you for this useful information. It will be my guide.
I'm Belgian. There's nothing stressful about it (except the waiter's arrogance 🙂 ). Just order like in any European country: look at the menu and choose the things you want. Don't start changing stuff. Order the food exactly like it is on the menu. Most common thing is to order a drink like a gin, glass of champagne or martini, then your soup or "apéritif" and the "plat principal". Don't worry, they will not bring it all at the same time like in the US (bc in the US the waiter wants to collect his/her money immediately). After you have finished this, you decide about the desert (ask for the desert menu). Cheers. PS in Europe a waiter will never ask for you to pay the bill while you are still eating bc his/her shift has ended. We usually take a whole night out to eat and pay at the end.
You guys are delightful and so helpful!
Doesn’t matter…..all the food is fantastic
Me again..on travel guide do you have one for 2023 published?
We will be in Paris next week and would love to share a meal with you!
A couple of additional tips, if you want to practice the language in France. After a few months of taking online language lessons, I'm just now spending three months in the country. Tip 1: Don't go to the busiest cafe in the middle of tourist season and attempt your French for the very first time with the incredibly busy waiter. He / she will require that you switch to English because they have no time to figure out what you're trying to say. Instead, find a relatively quiet restaurant or market, in a quieter neighborhood, maybe off-peak, and try out your French phrases. A worker who isn't overwhelmed is much more likely to take the time to work with you. Tip 2: As you're working on the vocabulary and grammar, it's absolutely essential to also take a thorough pronunciation course (Dylane has a very thorough pronunciation course on YouTube. But go with someone you're comfortable with.) After you get the basics, the language actually has far fewer sounds than English, but initially it's striking how distinctively the French pronounce words.
Excellent video! TY!
Nothing worse than a tourist trying to speak French….worse than the waiters English
We liberated them how quickly they forget!
What restaurant is that at 6:20 time stamp overlook eifell tower ?
So in English, we don’t say, “I am going to take le steack saignant aux pommes frites.” We say, “I am going to have le steack, etc. In French it is, “je vais prendre so don’t use the verb avoir.
Your videos have so much valuable information. I also like the way you and Colleen seem to always enjoy being together.
