All raccoons will wash their food if they have access to water. Friends of ours had a family of raccoons who routinely visited their patio. They would feed them hard boiled eggs and a variety of raw veggies each evening. They always included a large pan of water so that all the raccoons could wash their veggies and shell and wash their eggs. Very cute to watch.
None of you know why raccoons dip their food. It's because they use their hands to sense what they are about to eat. Their hands have high sensitivity when wet.

The French call them raton laveur (as in; young rat, washer). Well known enough for their washing food habit to have it in their name.
It's not sophistication you a-holes.
Supposedly it's the preferred method by all raccoons.
I have a kind message for the people that are giving the correct explanation of why they "wash" their food.
Fuck off. I just want to enjoy a wholesome moment without thinking about scientific facts. /J
It doesn't wash it is its thought that the water would make the food tastier
