  2. Ah, La Bella Firenze (did I say it right?) I remembered scaling the walls killing the Templars for Lorenzo de Medici.

  3. Yes! Lauren is livin the dayyydream. With a vlog that begins with you rising from bed, I know I'm going for a memorable ride that culminates with a closeup of Roman ass. Miss your moonwalks though😂

  4. I was thinking before this vlog I wonder if she also went to Florence (Firenze). Sure enough you did. I hope you had the gelato there – its the best in the world!

  5. The Piazzale Michelangelo you visited was designed by Giuseppe Poggi in 1869, and the monument was put there thanks to nine pairs of oxen in 1873! Not the only replica statue of David in Florence as there's another one (one that isn't bronze like that one) in the Piazza della Signoria. The replica was put there in 1910 to mark the location of the ORIGINAL David statue, the one now in the Galleria dell'Accademia! The original was moved indoors after nearly 400 years of being outside in 1873 so that the statue could be better protected after being damaged several times. But he wasn't safe indoors either when in 1991, someone smashed David's left foot with a hammer, which is why it's now protected with plexiglass.

Fun fact, it took four days and forty men to move the original statue half a mile from Michelangelo's workshop to the piazza! Originally the statue was supposed to be placed in a ceiling niche of the Duomo! But the committee decided that the statue was both too beautiful and too heavy to be placed up there (they would've needed to raise it roughly 260 feet), so they opted to place it in the piazza. The statue was suspended by ropes on a wooden scaffold, swaying gently as it was pulled and pushed along a series of trunks laid down across the cobblestones.

  6. To be fair to your family, they're experiencing jet lag while you're already living in Europe. Not to mention it's a vacation after all, you're meant to chillax! The Duomo is definitely impressive! It was constructed by Filippo Brunelleschi! The dome was built between 1420 and 1436 and is still the largest masonry vault in the world. The dome was built without employing centering (a wooden or iron structure) to support the masonry. To achieve this, overcoming the skepticism of his fellow citizens, Brunelleschi devised some extraordinary solutions to lighten the imposing structure. He opted to build two domes, one nested inside the other. The inner dome was built with four horizontal stone and chain hoops which reinforced the octagonal dome.

To build the dome, Brunelleschi employed innovative machines that he designed himself (like ox-driven hoist that brought the tremendously heavy stones up to the level of construction). The organization of the worksite and the availability of machines that could move enormous weights and lift them to considerable heights played a decisive role in the construction of the dome. Brunelleschi left neither drawings nor verbal descriptions of the various machines he designed and utilized. However, their exceptionally innovative nature attracted the attention of the greatest engineers of the 15th century.

  7. Did a semester in Florence; I ate, drank, laughed and loved. Being an American student in Europe is like living inside your own personal Movie
