I read that you could access Bardini gardens from Boboli so I tried to do that this past summer, but there was no entrance from there. Next time!

Small correction: in 1861 Italy didn't become a republic (that happened in 1946). It became a unified country under the royal house of Savoy. In 1864 the capital was moved from Turin (ancestral seat of the Savoy) to Florence to appease the French, who didn't want us to make Rome the capital. (Rome was made capital in 1870).
So in order to modernise the city and prepare it for its new role, much of the old medieval center was demolished, because the men of the XIX century preferred wide, straight avenues to the winding and narrow medieval streets.
