An easy Mulled Wine Recipe with a spiced twist to the classic flavoring! How to make the perfect winter drink called “Gløgg”.
Recipe:
2x Bottles of red wine,
A little bit of port wine,
1cup of Coconut sugar,
2dl of Blackcurrant syrup,
Some raisins and dried apricots,
6-7 cloves,
1 vanilla pod,
2 small cinnamon sticks,
1x lemon
1x clementine
First thing first – peel a couple of lemon and clementine zests, the skin of the clementine. Then cut the white parts off, as they contain lots of bitterness. We are only interested in the super aromatic oils within the skin.
Move on and cut open the vanilla pod from the the middle.
Get a pot and throw in the coconut sugar and all of the citrus peels. Make sure to give the citrus peels a twirl to release the oils.
Inn with the Cloves, Cinnamon sticks and the vanilla. Boom!
Then caramelize on low heat and as the sugar starts to melt and the kitchen starts to smell like a winter getaway, add the liquids: A squeeze of orange juice, blackcurrant syrup, and to balance off all this sweetness you need acidity from a whole lemon. Put it on to a boil and then add the wine.
My choice of red wine is a Montepulziano d’Abruzzo. Italian wine made from the Montepulciano grape. In this recipe I am going for a dry red wine with good acidity and soft tannins, with not too much complexity as we have already set the base of flavoring. Add 2x bottles of red wine.
If you want a mulled wine with lower alcohol you’d let it stay on the heat and evaporate the alcohol.Throw in the raisins and apricots. Then give this a five minute time to infuse and bring all the flavors together on low heat!
Add then your preference of spirits (Rhum, Vodka, Brandy, Port).
Boom!
