Spending billions on an appartment no one will likely buy ar definitely not live in at least instead of making affordable housing everyone would buy. America is like the Luis C.K bit when he talks about "this thing" and "THIS this", the "Of course not" and the "But maybe". While he makes clear that the obvious thing is the "of course not", America is all about the "But maybe". Of course we should solve the housing crisis… But maybe prioritising the rich citizens at the cost of everyone else is an easier sacrifice to deal with. The rich runs the nation so displeasing the rich with how the country is being run, developed and structured is too powerful a force and influence to have against you.
The building screams "Just because". The less it's actually needed the more just because. Peak capitalism in physical form.
The whole video is about how supposedly unique and otherworldly this penthouse is, but all I see is a bunch of empty rooms, sometimes literally, and furniture that is just meh. You can tell they can’t sell this thing. All the presenters are doing is saying oh, look at what you COULD do if you had eleventy trillion dollars and have this as your 18th property that never gets lived in. That second kitchen coated in brushed metal looks exactly like a food prep kitchen anywhere. I can find so many details that someone able to buy this would probably want changed, like the utilitarian, hospital-like exposed door hinges in the hallway. The whole thing looks and feels like the developer did just enough to turn what was probably an open space for events and say “hey look at this penthouse you can buy!” I’ve seen far more impressive 5-figure sq ft homes for hundreds of millions less that don’t require an elevator commute to access. What else would someone buy this place for other than the view and getting off on being above everyone? Is the view even going to be that consistently great with daily vehicle emanations rising toward you?
I want to thank America for becoming the most absurd dystopia just for the content we all can enjoy.
