YEREVAN | THE VARTANYAN BROTHERS PARK | HD

Yerevan inaugurates stunning new park in downtown, as the Armenian capital city is expanding its green spaces. The brand new park with a drip irrigation system, water fountains, and a mosaic map of Yerevan costs 5,300,000 USD to build. A park, which connects City Hall with Republic Square, was a gift to the municipality from the Vartanyan brothers, the Montréal-based family behind some of Armenia’s largest conglomerates including Grand Candy and Grand Tobacco.

The philanthropists had only one pre-condition for giving the gift: the park remains the property of Yerevan and any kind of business activity is banned from taking place in the area. The Vartanian Family Charitable Foundation will cover all maintenance expenses of the park for 99 years, starting from 2019.

The landscape architecture features a lozenge-shaped motif meant to invoke traditional Armenian carpet patterns and complement the nearby Republic Square which resembles a similar pattern. The new park is well received by our residents and visitors, who flocked in droves since the opening. Many play in its colorful fountains or posed for photographs with monuments meant to invoke the city’s ancient Urartian architectural motifs, such as a lion and a bull.
