Of course McDonald's was crowded – it has a monopoly on Italy's highways. You can rarely find a normal restaurant on a highway.
Italian food is not so good how much people thinking, the only thing is good is pasta. The meet here is very poor and the hotels in this country have a very old equipments its normal find broken equipment here. The country is very beautiful but have a very old stuff and machines. Sorry Italians but it's true.
I was in Rome last year and ate where the locals ate but didn't find the food all that special: lots of pasta and tomato sauce in all its variations. In fact, the best food was on the Royal Caribbean cruise (departing from Rome) as there were much more variety and freshers. May be it was just Rome?

You're not making yourself look very good here, like others have said below, if all you want to do is eat McDonalds when you travel abroad then you might as well just stay at home.
I was wondering, why did you guys choose to go photographing Italy at that period of the year ? Because of your respective schedules ? If that's the case, why Italy in the winter time ? To show beautiful pictures can still be taken at that not so sexy period ? I mean it seems not an ideal combination of location and weather for landscape photography, so was it a conscious decision and why? Thanks. Cheers.

I traveled extensively in Italy over several years from North to South, East to West and had exactly the same experience with the food. From small towns to large cities the vast majority of the restaurants I visited were average to below average. There were exceptions but I wasn't impressed with the food at all. It seems improbable that I was just unlucky dozens and dozens of times.
The McDonalds thing makes me incredibly sad.

I am italian and if you want my opinion here it is: they are saying that mcdonald is the most popular resaurant in italy, well… i don't think mcdonald and restaurant are words that can be put togheter, also in italy there are very few places where you can find mcdonald excluding the principal city (Napoli,Milano,Roma), so they are tipacally visited by teens because it's different from our culture and also is really cheap. I don't want to be the one saying that every italian food is good, everyone has its own taste( especially for foreigners), and also every country has it's own delicious dishes but not every restauraunt can make a good quality dish. This said i hope it was only a click bait title, because if you really thinks so after have eaten at least one of many tipical italian dishes, i really have no words.
Guys, you should just stay at home where there's a McDonald's around every corner.
