Virginia wine has a history that goes all the way back to the early 1600s, when the first colonists began trying to plant vines to send back to the British empire. However, harsh, challenging conditions such as rain, fog, and humidity made it hard to grow wine grapes. Thomas Jefferson also spent much of his life trying to make Virginia a hub for fine wine, but he failed. Finally, in the 1970s, a group of winemakers led by Gianni Zonin cracked the code. Today, there are over 300 wineries in the state of Virginia, from the hills of Monticello and Piedmont region to the Middleburg area and the Blue Ridge Mountains. In this episode, we start by learning the history of Virginia wine with Gabriele Rausse. Next, we visit Barboursville Vineyards and Stone Tower Winery. Plus, we spend time at Caramont Farms making goat cheese, exploring downtown Middleburg, and eating at Patowmack Farm and Field and Main (with winemakers from Veritas winery and Walsh Family Wines). We end at a polo match at King Family Vineyards, watching the horses and drinking rosé.

Living in Southern Maryland and being so close to these wineries, I absolutely loved this episode. Fingers crossed that at some point you will be doing an episode on Maryland wines! Looking forward to watching Vino First.
What an amazing experience to meet some of the Virginia wine trailblazers. Another great episode. I would love to see episodes of Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay.
Keep up the great content definitely amazing place to see 👀
new season is heree❤
what a privilege to be part of this episode, I enjoyed every bite (obviously, lol!) and sip! Cheers to a second round, there is SOOO much more VA to explore with you Vince!! Excited to delight viewers with a tour when they🍷Visit Loudoun County!
Very interesting episode about Virginia. I just started working in the wine industry as a grocery store wine bar clerk in east Tennessee. Wow!, There's a lot to know about wine. This channel makes it interesting.
ugh i need to go! i'm from pennsylvania and knowing there's more wine regions near me other than the finger lakes is super exciting.
Another outstanding video Vince. Thank you.
I was in Georgia in November 2021 and was shocked to try some surprisingly good reds and an amazing chardonnay within 45 minutes drive of Atlanta (they've got lots of red clay soils there), so I shouldn't be surprised to see great wines being made further up the East Coast. You've got me searching the internet to see if these vineyards will ship directly to Boston.
And, can't wait for the Vino First episodes. Keep up the great work.
Perhaps, the best episode you have produced. Informative, emotional, and well edited !
Love your show.
When will you ge doing a segment on the Canadian Niagara region? And I don't mean just ice wine.
I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this episode. I fell in love with Virginia wines about eight to ten years ago when I visited Monticello and bought a bottle of Gabriele Rausse in the gift shop. I’ve been back a few times to the region and have visited Veritas, King Family, Rausse and several others. It was great to see these highlighted in your show but even better was getting to hear from the winemakers and other artisans from the area.
I've been waiting excitedly for this episode for a couple of reasons. One, for the stellar content you always deliver. And two, so I could leave a comment on a current video saying: in anticipation of the new season, I went back and watched all the older ones. And it never fails to strike me what a great wine educator you are and, most importantly, how open and appreciative and kind and genuine you are with all the folks you meet and highlight in your series. Brother, as long as you and the crew keep producing shows, I'll be right there to enjoy them. Thank you for what you do and for being you.
What an awesome episode! I had no idea this existed, thank you so much for this great information and I look forward to trying VA wines
Another wonderful episode. Hard to articulate how good these make me feel, and how inspired I am after each one. Vince and the team are doing something unique in wine, and we are all better for watching it.
Thanks!
Love your channel Vince! Thank you so much.
Cheers to a new video from you and your team!

Another great video V! Man…now I'm interested in petite manseng. Great interviews and man the food looked awesome! Love your vids and keep up the great work. Can't wait
for the next one. Salud!!
U have to go to Argentina Mendoza to make a video. Good people, really nice places and food. And great wine.
Visited Charlottesville many times but looking forward to visiting Loudoun Co.
Another awesome episode! Thanks for everything you do, Vince!
So Glad you covered Virginia. I love your show, and as a future Virginia wine maker and vineyard owner, I am pleased that people are awakening to the authenticity and uniqueness of Virginia wine. Its a frontier where, the possibilities are endless, and a each year brings more exploration in new varietals, and new expressions of the "underdog" varietals in the most well known wines in the world.
I've never thought of the USA as this kind of destination until watching the Washington show and now this one. This is a great way of putting the spotlight on a place.
Thanks!
I fall in love with the story of every episode. Thank you so much for creating such educational and awe-inspiring content! To season 5 and beyond!
You didn't visit TRUMP WINERY in Charlottesville? ?
Come on!!!
Cannot recommend a long weekend trip to Charlottesville enough. Between the vineyards, the food scene, the history, the Blue Ridge mountains and the grounds of the University, it truly is a magical place.
Wow what a great video and I am very impressed with your knowledge of wines and most of all pairing. We usually are stuck on Valpolicella region in Italy but I am excited to visit Va and try their wines. Can you recommend a winery in Va that has big and bold wines like Amarone and Ripasso or even a Chianti ?
