Why, in some regions of the world, do we love dogs and eat pigs? It’s a question best answered with an appraisal of the cultural, historic and psychological roots of meat consumption.

At the Goldschmaus abattoir, animal welfare officer Gerald Otto explains why he thinks it’s OK to eat meat – and shows, with astonishing transparency, what measure abattoirs take to ensure as painless a death as possible for thousands of animals every day.

The US-American psychologist Melanie Joy identifies a widespread ideology within many societies: from childhood we learn to distinguish a small group of animals as edible – and the meat of all other creatures as disgusting. And to uphold this belief, says Melanie Joy, we repeatedly tell ourselves three myths: Eating meat is natural, necessary and normal.

Ilja Steffelbauer is examining just how natural our meat consumption really is. The cultural historian has researched the history of meat from the beginnings of mankind to the present. He provides a clear explanation of how hunting has influenced us – and why after millennia of scarcity, we became the greediest meat-eaters in history.

Nutritionist Niko Rittenau explores the question of how necessary it really is for us to consume meat. What nutrients does meat contain? Can we get these from other foodstuffs? Why do we find meat so delicious – and what role do our instincts play?

Finally, the documentary investigates the idea that eating meat is normal. Different cultures have different interpretations of what’s normal – so what does that mean for humanity as a whole?

  1. 03:45 comparing cows and golden retrievers made stop watching, not because cows cant be great friends and have complex emotions but because i knew they would follow a line of thought based on manipulating our emotions

  2. You kill millions on insects but you cry when someone slaughters one pig. On the grand scale of the universe a fly is no bigger than a pig.

  3. We can't unchange the fact that not only do we need certain vitamins, minerals, etc, we also need the packaging. E. G. meat.

Eating plant diets have a nasty tax : disease. Heart disease is proportional to consumption of plants.

  4. The scene with the CO2 and the pigs is absolutely heart wrenching to watch. And look how the ducks try to get away from him before being force fed. Thank you for sharing this. Hopefully this gets to the eyes of people that need to see this and hopefully we can welcome some new vegans into the fold.

  5. My comment is on the quality of the news production. This channel likes to beat around the bush. It goes round and round before, if at all, it gets to its point. Really boring. I like to check this channel out, however, because I like to get the German perspective on things. And it becomes a frustrating process.

  6. A Good and real documentary, awaiting for another part.
I think it will be easy to take decision when one think about whether to live for eating or to eat for living.

  7. Genesis 9:3-4 Every moving animal that is alive may serve as food for you. Just as I gave you the green vegetation, I give them all to you. 4 Only flesh with its life—its blood—you must not eat.

animals were provided by God for our needs and commanded that everything that can be eaten EXCEPT ONLY ITS BLOOD IS HOLY TO GOD

  8. Its sad they use cheap CO2 because it settles instead of dispersing. Nitrogen is painless and more than 75% of the air we breathe and its what people who want to die because of cancer, etc use for suicide.

  9. When the medical and scientific community actually want to see the truth they will find out that its the highly processed grain and seed that are the root cause of metabolic disorders, obesity and disease because the digestive system was never designed to consume food stripped of fiber. You end up with pure sugar and pure fat which floods the liver with pure fuel and causes/promotes metabolic disorder, etc. once i quit the sugar, grain and starch and began eating meat and low starch vegetables i lost 40 lbs, reversed pre diabetes and reversed high blood pressure no longer require any meds. No longer hungry all the time. So if you think you are doing the planet a favor not consuming meat you are doing so at the expense of your own health. I hate factory farming and would love to see a local small production of food like when i grew up in the 60-70s but i will never support a vegan and/or grain/seed foundation diet it kills our pets and you would already see that if you were paying attention as our pets being fed 70% processed grain commercial doggie fast food are getting the same issues and diseases as humans eating a high glycemic grain/seed based diet. Oral health issues, diabetes, cancers, obesity. Yet my 3 year old dog fed 90% animal based diet of raw meat, bones, skin primarily has perfect teeth requiring zero brushing no skin allergies, gas or any other health issues. That is plenty proof to me that like our dogs humans have no business eating processed grain/seed based diets.

  10. Pescatarian for the past 3 years and would never go back to eating meat ever again.

  11. Just more ant-meat propaganda. Many Vegans eventually see the light and go back to eating meat. If you want to be the healthiest version of yourself, eat lots of meat. Go research the latest science………yes, the latest science.

  12. Eating meat can lead to various cancers, dementia, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and corona. bon appetit.

  13. Animals have bad luck for living with psychopath humans on the same planet 💔💔💔💔💔💔😭😭😭😭😭😭😡😡😡😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬🤬

  14. It's Not Food It's Violence 💔💔💔💔💔💔😭😭😭😭😭😭😡😡😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

  15. Don't you feel remorse for your crimes against these innocent creatures?
Don't you see that they love life like you and don't want to die?
Don't you see how much they are afraid of dying and scream out of fear?
Do you want someone to treat you and your family or loved ones like this?
If you have an iota of compassion and conscience, stop this dirty work.
    (Eating meat is a crime

  16. "We anaesthetize the animals with CO2"

Translation: "We cause the pigs horrible pain, so that when we actually kill them . . . they don't feel pain. This makes sense somehow."

  17. I tried to go vegetarian… but ended up very weak and ill within two weeks. I wound up with iron deficiency anemia because my allergies and sensitivities prevent me from eating 90% of the available fruits and vegetables in the supermarkets… I don't like it, but right now I don't have a choice but to go along with societal norms. However, I'm working hard to save up to start my own organic farm where I can grow alternative foods that I'm not allergic to~ I'll still eat meat, mainly because I'm an omnivore, but I want to change my source to a more humane one and continue reducing the amount until I reach the bare minimum my body needs. In a perfect world? I'd only eat animals I raise, hunt, and fish for myself so that I will know that the poor creature didn't suffer unnecessarily. It breaks my heart to harm any living thing, even plants… but…. I gotta eat.

  18. The animal meat industry is messed up. There's no humane way to kill an animal. You don't have to become 100% vegan to help save animals' lives but cutting down on meat consumption is a step in the right direction. It's a moral obligation.

  19. "I think that everyone can and should be allowed to eat what they want"…-Jeffrey Dahmer

  20. When fake nutritionists talk about food to be nutritionists you need to study chemistry to understand! I prefer the bio farm it’s enough for all of us a real nutritionists will tell you to not eat more than 3 portions of meat all week! This is bad when a television show this fake ideology on this days every one is nutritionists or psychologists or talk about neuroscience 😂😂

  21. No, we don’t. 70 billion animals killed each year to feed humans. Not needed.

  22. I just cant stop watching the videos you guys make , its super informative and on point ! People really need to know what's going on now in the real world . There is just so much stuff that we don't know . Please dont stop making your videos .
    Sending love from Singapore ❤

  23. As human our body need animals protein our creature make them for us as mentioned in last book even which type best for us and vegan thing is natural supplements and people make them life style

  24. As a person of scienhce, I found the approach in this video is one of the best to discuss this topic and the parameters were spot on! Brilliant job, team DW!

  25. You tell me I learned 'Women cant be astronauts' in school? Where did this political nugget come from?

I don't think so. And neither have you. Even Germans don't teach their children that.

We call this 'Pushing your political agenda' in my nick of the woods. And all paid for with tax money.

  26. Rationally doesn't happen naturally in humans. We need to be constantly reminded that we are.

  27. I am Vegetarian from India . Our Culture promotes Vegetarianism strongly ( 600 Million peoples in India are Vegetarian ) . We love Animals ❤

  28. We've been eating meat forever but no, soy made pseudo-food and iron and B12 supplements is what our bodies really need.
