  1. Don't quote me on this but I believe Venice is sinking for the same reason Chicago is (was?) sinking. Or Mexico City. It was built on marshland (on stilts, in this case) and the soft ground can't support all that weight.

  2. America or the Americas are continents. Somewhere along the way the US just started calling itself America and I guess the rest of the world out of politeness just went along with it. And I can dis the US all I want because I’m a US American born and raised and I’m also one who no longer lives there.

  3. Ha ha haaa What a joke you are playing Heidi, if you have only eaten "Italian" food in the US you have NOT eaten REAL Italian food… Because once you come to Italy and visit the back streets, where no tourists go and visit these small Italian restaurants and you will realize that the "Italian" food you ate at home in America is not at all as good or even tastes the same.

  4. 12:52 "Almost every single town has at least one church"?
Aight, substitute "town" with "square kilometer" and you might be closer to the truth… XD
Even the smaller among the main cities ("capoluoghi di provincia", 108 in total in the whole country) still have at least about a dozen churches contained in their city centers alone.
Every village has at least one church, but most probably a couple additional chapels on top of that. And maybe smaller chapels and "edicole" (simple shrines, I believe they're simply called "aedicules" in English) disseminated all over the countryside.
They're not all necessarily nice-looking, but there's a lot of them everywhere.
I get a cultural shock every time I visit any new non-Italian city because I don't see churches or chapels or something similar at every corner – and since I don't live in Italy anymore, I get schocked quite often.

  5. This video is old and inaccurate. For example, it is not true that Venice is flooded, because a mobile dam has been built.

  6. Italian here. So, a couple of things: best season to visit is spring, summer can be very hot.

"Terroni" doesn't haven't a meaning, but in the origin meant something like "farmer". Although with the right people you can joke about the term, it's usually a word a polite person won't use. It sounds like "redneck".

Italians have a love/hate relationship with the US. After wwII US established many permanent military bases and many people don't like it. On top of that, in 1998 two american pilots caused the deaths of 20 people (Cermis tragedy), were taken to US and sentenced for less then 6 months of jail; that caused outrage in public opinion. At last, in 1970, CIA supported a coup attempt by far right (Golpe Borghese); this was demonstrated in court; there are also big suspicions about CIA involvement in the seventies far right domestic terrorism (Anni di Piombo, "Years of Lead") where numerous bombings caused hundreds of civilian victims. All of this to counter the rise of the Italian Communist Party.

So you can understand why many Italians hold a grudge towards the USA. But it's much more a thing about the US as a country, not it's people

  7. First time I was in Italy, the car we drove to the beach in was broken into. Very pro. They had someone watching the beach, phoning when we entered, and when we left.
    Police did nothing.
Second time I was in Italy, it was a bigger group, and after almost being run over in Rome because a 1 lane road is used as a 2 lane road with scooters between, and a 2 lane as 3 lane and so on.
We went away from the traffic. Where people where very active in getting money, with signs. Fair enough, even if its not something we where use to, and most of them no doubt did not really need it. But also here it was for a system of distract while others tried to pick pocket people and so on.
    Police did nothing.

But at the same time, if you stay away from the tourist places, that is all about robbing you. Then Italy is nice. So much history and things to see. And to be fair, there is so much of it, you do not need to go the the robbing tourist traps. And in general people also seem more helpful and open when you get away from those things.

    – " Some people think America is a Continent. "
Well I hope everyone thinks that :p
Or in fact, its two Continents. North and South America.

Fun fact about the Alpes. The top of them is actually rock/Earth from Africa. You can clearly see the different layers from the European parts and the African, from when the plates where pushed up to form the mountains.
Fun Fact about Volcanos. Right next to Vesuvius, there is an other Volcano. A much more important one.
A much bigger one, in fact its sort of a Super volcano. Its now below water because when it have erupted it has blown away the earth. The Romans builds baths there due to the hot water and minerals. And it can be seen today, in fact its getting more active again. And that is sort of a problem. To put it into perspective, one time in Europe there where these people called Neanderthals. However this super volcano blowing up, meant that shortly after, the only trace of the Neanderthals where in the Homo sapiens DNA ( Our DNA ) Yes, this Volcano is most likely the thing that ended them.

Fun fact about Pizza, since he mentioned it a lot, and it is Italy.
But despite what many think, and many Italians say, Pizza is not really an Italian thing.
Its been around for 1000 of years, and the oldest version of pizza ever found was in ancient Egypt, in the towns of the skilled labor that build temples and pyramids.

About Venice, to say the climate does not have an impact would be dumb.
However, its not black and white. Firstly. Right now Venice is not flooded, But dry. There is no water in the canals.
And also, the natural cycle of things, floods and drying out has been going on for a much longer time than intense human pollution.
Again, this does not mean human pollution is good, its just important to understand these things if you really want to improve on them.
And in general water rising is an issue for every city on the coast, and that is most of them.

As said, Italy has so much great history, but one of my favorite ones has to do with the Danes/Norse.
For people that have watched the tv show vikings, they will know about it, but like most things in the show, they got things wrong.
The Norse sailed to Britannia and Northern France, everyone knows this. But they also sailed to Spain, the first time they actually ran into trouble. The Muslims there where much harder to raid.
But they sailed further, in fact they did what they did to Northern France to Southern France to, sailing up the rivers and all that, even though not many mention in.
And they sailed to Italy. Having heard stories of the famous city of Rome, the holy seat of Christendom. And a group of Danes/Norse got the idea it would be cool to sack this city. Imagine the tales that would be told. So they sailed down the coast, and saw a big city with walls. And they laid siege to it, but it did not go that well.
So one of the leaders tricked the city to let him in so he could be baptized ( This is where the TV show comes in, in the show this story was used at Paris, where it did not happen, by Ragnar who did not do it ) And the city did, and he then opened the gates. However, this city was not Rome, it was a City called Luni.
The Scandinavian people would actually play a big role in Italy in the years to come after this, the raid was around 860. And when Danes where given Normandy in France, the Normans started to sail to Italy as mercenaries, and where given land as payment. and they ruled most of Southern Italy for a long time. In fact on Sicily they formed the first Christian kingdom with religious freedom. Based on the Dane/Norse ideology, they where much more accepting of different cultures, people and religions, and learning and trading was the main drive, no matter the nationality or religion.

  8. It could have done much (much) better (not you, the beard man) with the video, too bad. 🍺

  9. Italians have a very good view of the american people. Mainly because americans love us italians and our culture so much, so we appriciate this a lot. Most of us kinda mock americans for the distorted knowledge that they have of Italian food (like thinking that Alfredo sauce, chicken parm and garlic bread are italian dishes), but we appriciate the fact that you guys like italian cuisin a lot.

The thing that makes a lot of italians not liking the US so much(politically, not its people) is the fact that there are many american military bases in Italy with nuclear bombs kept in them and we kinda didn't ask for them and we don't like having them here😅, especially now that the USSR is gone, we don't see the point of keeping your nuclear weapons here. What is more, the US has interfered in the italians elections after WW2 because the communist party was very strong in Italy since the people fighting against fascism in Italy were mainly of communist ideology, so when fascism was defeated, the communists were going to get the majority in the parliament, and the US didn't want that to happen, but it's not like the italian communists wanted a dictatorship like in the USSR, they were a lot more chill, but, anyway.

Of course we are allies through NATO and we know that the US would come and help us in case of danger, so I'd say that the relationship between Italy and the USA is very good overall!

  10. (10:12) Hi. The word "terroni" (plural of "terrone") I think can be translated as "redneck": a word that the Italians of the north, in an offensive tone, call the southerners. The word comes from "terra" (which in Italian means both planet Earth and "land") and the evaluative suffix "-one/i" (which usually means "large" in Italian with reference to the word that precedes it; in English you have augmentative prefixes like "over-", "super-" or "mega-" to mean the same thing). So, in practice, the reference to the "terrone" is the one who once worked the land, the farmer, given that northern Italy was the most industrialized and the south was the most agricultural (a bit like New England as opposed to Dixie, I think). Being, by stereotype, peasants considered by "more industrialized" people ignorant and uncouth, this appellation "terrone" is a sort of insult that we tend to avoid (I think you have a similar thing in America, as well as "rednecks" for peasants, also "hillbillies" for mountain people). Nowadays you hear it almost exclusively from southern comedians to make fun of themselves (a bit like in certain movies some African-American actors use the word "n…." among themselves, without really wanting to offend).

I hope I made that clear enough. Greetings from Bologna, Italy. XOXO

  11. Italy is one of my favourite places to go.
Great weather, amazing food, beautiful nature and friendly people.

  12. 2:20 Umm…America is a continent. Two depending on who you ask. The U.S. is a country…. ONE of the 23 countries of North America

  13. 9:06 Venice isn't flooding anymore. The canals are drying up! Some of Venice's secondary canals have practically dried up lately due a prolonged spell of low tides linked to a lingering high-pressure weather system. Gondolas are docked along a canal during a low tide

  14. the venice flooding thing is due to both global warming and venice kinda sinking since it's build on soft soil (not an expert, just what I hear)

  15. I watched some of your videos before, which I really appreciate, and I'm happy you reacted to something abouy my country. There is plenty of other videos about it like the ones that shows the best places in Italy for example. I'd be glad to watch them too if you decide to react to them.

  16. Venice doesn't flood every year, it is more like every few months (depending on the season, and how high you want the water to get before you consider it "flooding"). AFAIK it isn't so much due to global warming, as much as a combination of high tide and the wind blowing *just right*.

That said, human influence is still felt, as massive ships and industrialisation have eroded the lagoon's bed increasing the phenomenon's severity.

In sept. 2023 the MOSE project (essentially a massive system of moving dams) is due to be inaugurated which should mitigate the phenomenon a bit.

Also, "terroni" refers to "terra", meaning ground/earth and essentially implies that the people from the south are farmers (implying uncultured yokels). You don't want to call a southener terrone to their face.

  17. Just to remind you that you have some italian followers! Ask us for advice if you need before you come here! Cheers!

  18. Ireland call football soccer because they like USA have their own type of football that is played with the hands, don't know why the other countries call it soccer 🙂

America is a not a continent either, North America is, USA is the states(countries) that decided to enter a union so they are the united countries of the continent North America, but when becoming a country USA was never given a new country name and remained the USA

  19. I went interrailing some years ago and Italy was without a doubt my favorite country. People are so friendly there.

  20. There is nothing better than an exciting football (soccer 🤢) match between Italy and Germany. During the game we are bitter rivals and no matter who wins, we celebrate together afterwards. Germans and Italians have a very, very long friendship if we leave Arminius aside. And you notice that when you go on vacation to Italy🥰

  21. the part about soccer isnt true lol most of those countries call it football or futbol or some variation of that. Also yea the percentage thing is so weird to us, to us youre all american your nationality is the country you were born and grew up in not whoever your grandparents grandparents were lol.

  22. Italy is the most beautiful country in Europe. And You are beautiful too. You are welcome here in my Italy 🙂

  23. nice reaction, I'm glad you would like to come and that you have Italian origins, I also recommend you to react about the best places to visit in Italy, about the history of Italy, things to know before visiting Italy, facts about Italy , like being Italian, cultural shocks etc…I'd be curious to see your reaction, love from Italy 🇮🇹❤️🤗

  24. So funny how you cringe about the USian obsession with ancestry now LOL!!!!

  25. Italy is very good friends with the US, as part of NATO they hosted large bases of US troops for decades and have been extensive trade partners since the end of ww2

  26. My only advice visiting Italy, don't be scared of the South. It's beautifully delicious, stunning in natural beauty and the people are boisterously warm and welcoming. LOL 🤣

  27. Venice is known for "Aqua alta" (High water) for centuries. There is nothing new about it being flooded every year.

  28. Heidi, please tell us what you have done all those years at school! A lot you hear is common knowledge. AND WHAT ABOUT ITALIAN MUSIC ?? Totally unmentioned! CLASSICAL AND MODERN !! A SHAME !! Heidi you must talk about the music now!

  29. Calling "terrone" someone from south of Italy is like calling the N word an african-american person
