Even with a chairlift ride to start the day, it was a steep slog up the Witches’ Mountain, but the intricate carvings along the way cheered us on.
The immense meal at @arnikahuette didn’t hurt, either. 🍷
At the top of the Alpe di Siusi sits the Witches’ Benches (𝘏𝘦𝘹𝘦𝘯𝘣ä𝘯𝘬𝘦) where the witches of yore could see across to Schlern Mountain where the coven gathered to practice magic and send storms across the Alpe di Siusi.
Whether or not these women were sending storms, they were murdered and burned at the stake at a nearby castle. Some things never change.
I love witches, mountains, steep climbs, and wine with lunch, so this was the perfect hike for me.
On the descent back to Castelrotto, I gave spellcasting a try (𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘰) at the Witches’ Chairs (𝘏𝘦𝘹𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘵ü𝘩𝘭𝘦). Apparently, these witches did a lot of sitting.
📍 Start at the Marizan Chairlift in Castelrotto, then take Trail 9 (left) to Trail 8 (right) to Arnika Hutte, then Trail 14 to the Witches’ benches. On the return, stick to Trail 8 all the way back to see the Witches’ Chairs.
