The idea that a country's cuisine should be priced based on its cultural worth is absurd. The pricing should be commensurate to the value of what you're getting, that's it, discard all the external politics.
I live in Shanghai, I think it's a little more expensive than other Asian dishes. but when i go to japan, I think Italian food is cheaper than I thought
Italian Noodles derived from Chinese Noodles. Italian tricking people it's different noodle than the original Chinese noodle. LOL
I think Chinese people set out to make money by being more accessible to the common man, while Italians were in the restaurant business for being an exclusive place to eat by having a higher price point because the mob didn't want just anybody being in their restaurants. But i literally know nothing it is just a thought
Didn’t Italians get noodles from Asia during Marco Polo times ?
Why do I wonder these things quietly … and then you do a story about it.
We also ask the same things… why is Chinese always expected to be CHeap. But Japanese is expected to be elevated and hand made and expensive ?
I agree that Italian food (but I guess it applies to any european cuisine like French, Spanish, Swiss etc) might be overpriced in America (but tbh depends on also the restaurant's price point) and I agree that there is surely a racist underline as to why people have an expectation for Asian food to be cheap. However the comments and the undertone of the video reducing Italian food to just pasta , or comparing a Cacio and Pepe which, despite using only a handful of ingredients, requires actually a lot of technique to reach a perfect consistency, to Mac and Cheese is offensive. And people dissing Italian food or saying that " basically it came from China like the noodles because of Marco Polo" (btw that's just a legend) are a bit childish.
The Chinese are smart they sell by a higher volume with lower prices and customer return rate. And they work harder.
Here in the UK Indian food is the most expensive like every other Asian cuisines Indians have to order several dishes to make one whole meal and spices are very expensive. Another reason is that it's one of the most loved cuisines here so Indians can charge higher prices. Brits think differently to Americans, it's nothing to do with whether the country is poor or not.
In canto, yau peng yau leng coined from Hong Kong immigrants, cheap and pretty. Asians in America weren't making such a decent paycheck as Americans and many then in the 50's 60's were sending money back to old country to support families. Restaurants in general to gain patronage had to keep prices low otherwise be swatting flies. The Chinatowns and asian hubs continue to serve new immigrants and cheap prices are needed to balance paychecks of many in distress or advance to next step.
I've always wondered why this was the case.
No good shouldn't be more expensive, its already ungodly expensive as it is. If anything we need the food to be cheaper
So I feel this way with soul food would never pay for it..I prefer Thai, Vietnamese, and india over that any day so it has more value…over priced means you should not charge that amount. I'm from Seattle where pho was like under 10. I now live in a city where it's 15 and up, I pay it because I want it
Italian foods are ok, not that special.
I think one reason why most Asian restaurants charge less than Italian restaurants is that Asian restaurants mostly cater to middle class Asian families. Compared to Italian restaurants where people have the money to spend, customers at Asian restaurants are more price sensitive hence it would be hard to increase prices.
Like what you've said, aside from having good food, selling an experience adds value to the business. A change in the theme, interiors or having an added attraction or service can definitely help level up their game and help diversity their market.
Cream sauce is not italian.
I have never thought aboit the economics of a country when eating a meal. I feel this conversation is a reach.
Easy…racism. Nothing more, nothing less
When I lived in Japan sushi, ramen, shabu shabu, okonomiyaki, nabe, yakiniku, yakisoba, and kinds of food were cheap in price most of the time. In the states, you're literally getting ripped off, especially for a bowl of ramen just because they make you think it's considered an exotic food lol 🍜
Italian places used to be not too expensive in the past. The newer places just charged more for fancy versions, and the older places often just vanished because the clientele went away, or got older and stopped eating so much. These spots were a lot more like what we think of as a simple Asian family restaurant.
Every culture's cuisine has its high end and low end. Chinese take out is cheap, because it made for people who want a meal made quickly. Go to a high end dine in Chinese restaurant and the food is more expensive. Same with Japanese, Thai, Korean, and Filipino restaurants. Italian food is highly commercialized. You have Chef Boyardee, Ellios Pizza, and Totino's Pizza Rolls. I'm sure there are Italians who don't like their cuisine cheapened like that. Pizzerias that serve other dishes then pizza, have baked ziti, eggplant parmasan, penne a la vodka with chicken, cheeseburgers, chicken wings etc. they will be cheaper then the dine in high end Italian restaurants.
Not true all food from poor countries are expected to be cheap. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. Go to a Haitian restaurant in Miami, Boston, Chicago, NYC, Rockland County NY, Long Island, or New Jersey. You will definitely pay a lot. And a lot of these Haitian restaurants are not even dine in with a wine menu.
Lots of fine dining Chinese restaurants in Hong Kong and Singapore with prices higher than a typical Italian restaurant. Perhaps Chinese restaurants in the US have not evolved much from the ones you find in their Chinatowns.
Because of White Worship. I never eat out Italian food unless it's pizza. Italian Food is Easy AF to make. I can make it myself at home and dont have to tip a waiter.
Italian food is not the best European food. That title belongs to the French. Classic French cuisine is unmatched when it comes to white people food lol
