Much of the island is sandy beaches, together with a mountainous and rugged landscape.

Well-known people born in, or with a family connection, include:
(1) The famous presenter, model and actress Elisabetta Canalis.
(2) The famous Italian international footballer, Gianfranco Zola.
(3) The boxer, Joe Calzaghe, whose father Enzo is from Sardinia; and
(4) The jockey, Frankie Dettori, who was born in Milan of Sardinian parents.
#24. The Food.
(1) Su Porch’ay’ddu, a roast suckling pig that’s cooked on a spit.
(2) Pecorino Sardo, a local cheese made from sheep’s milk.
(3) Pecora in Cappotto, a mutton stew, made with potatoes in a rich broth of meat and wild herbs.
(4) Bottarga – this is a fish delicacy that’s similar to anchovies.
(5) Carasau, a wafer-thin light and crispy bread.
(6) Sardines, the popular oily fish, are named after Sardinia.
(7) Casu Marzu, a local delicacy cheese full of maggots!
#25. The Wine, Beer and Liqueur.
Sardinia produces less wine than any other Italian region.
Sardinia has the highest consumption of beer per capita.
Mirto is the local liqueur, made from myrtle.
