Chef Gino D’Acampo concludes his culinary journey around his native Italy, starting the final leg of his trip in Puglia. Always on the lookout for amazing food, Gino is rewarded in the town of Altamura – world-famous for its bread. His next stop is one of the poorest regions of southern Italy – Basilicata. In the beautiful old town of Matera, he samples traditional cucina povera, or poor people’s cuisine, and uses local bread to rustle up an Italian version of beans on toast. Back in Puglia, Gino visits enchanting Alberobello, a tourist haven which was one of his favourite childhood holiday destinations. The town’s unusual trullo houses with their conical roofs led him to believe that they were inhabited by the Smurfs. Above the distinctive rooftops, our chef transforms a rustic loaf into perfect picnic fare, stuffed with salami, piquant cheese and grilled vegetables
