Here we are with the mayor of Capraia island-Marida Bessi.
Capraia is a little island off the coast of Tuscany between Corsica and Elba islands.
Signora Sindica (madame mayor) has spearheaded a unique and interesting cultural, social and ecological vision for the island.
She’s planning for a renaissance of local agri-‘culture’ with support for locals to start up and expand businesses to produce artisanal products made on the island.
She has also received grants for restoring a beautiful abandoned church and monastery and plans to also turn ex prison buildings into thriving agriculture businesses.
The population of the island is tiny at less than 400 people.
Capraia island has an ancient heritage as the ancient Greeks, Phoenicians and Saracens all had control at some time during the last millennia.
Ancient carved wine pressing stones are dotted around the island.
Many of the Tuscan islands were also prisons- with Napoleon famously being exiled in the close by Elba island.
Signora Sindico Marida Bessi believes it’s important to respect the environment and has led the transformation of most of the island into a protected park.
All local businesses will respect and renew ancient local
agricultural practices with the restoration of terraces for wines,
and the return of goats to the island as well
as artisanal produce utilizing the island’s unique biosphere.
There also is a bio fish farm producing local varieties of fish.
