Wine Guide Suzanna Pachniuk explains why you should pass on Prosecco in favour of this premium sparkler …
If you love a Prosecco or fizz as much as I do but youโre open to exploring a different but equally delicious style of grape from northern Italy … this spumante is a must-have!
When people think of sparkling from Italy, most think Prosecco. What if I told you Italy has an incredible fizz that the local people of Friuli enjoy as their go-to? Let me introduce you to the Ribolla Gialla grape … from the tiny Reguta winery. Family-owned Reguta make an incredibly lively, extra dry spumante in tiny quantities. Thereโs a hint of rennet apple on the nose; even a light chamomile aroma. The palate offers an elegant mouthfeel of a fine mousse … similar to Prosecco yet the bubbles are smoother and itโs fuller in body.
It has a delightful citrus zing of apple with a lemon sherbet note and a touch of quince fruit. I can picture indulging in a couple bottles of Reguta on the garden patio with friends. It would be a brilliant aperitif but pairs well with a cold appetiser, like Parma ham, or roast chicken. Itโs a very easygoing and refreshing style which would be a fine pairing for those hot summer days. You just canโt go wrong.
Tasting Note: Full, elegant body. Lively, smooth bubbles with floral aromas. Crisp and citrusy with apple and yellow pear flavours. Very drinkable.
