Summer is in full swing here in Canada. It’s patio sipping time. One great patio sipper we haven’t made yet is the Aperol Spritz! The word spritz is a type of cocktail that stems from the German word spritzen, meaning ‘to spray’ or ‘to splash’. A Spritz can be traced back to the 1800s, when in the northern regions of Italy were apart of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Austrian soldiers found the Italian Wine too acidic. So they added a splash of water to it. As time moved on, brothers Luigi and Silvio Barbieri came up with a new liquor – Aperol. Which turned out to be an instant success. Aperol grew in popularity throughout the beginning of the 20th century, and the Spritz movement began to change once Aperol made its way east to Venice. So the story goes.

Cheers!
