Gaja winery was founded in 1859 and is famous for their Barolo and Barbaresco wines.
In 1994, Angelo Gaja purchased their first winery in Tuscany (Pieve Santa Restituta). They followed that up by purchasing Ca Marncanda in 1996. “Ca” stands for Casa or house. “Marcanda” stands for mercanteggiere or to haggle. So the winery name means “the house of endless negotiations”. Angelo Gaja took 18 trips to Tuscany to complete the negotiations for this winery. Promis (pronounced Prom mees) is the Gaja family’s promise of quality and reward of diligence and excellence.
The winery is located in Bolgheri with some of the vineyard located in Bibbona. The soil is lime and clay. Because it is a blend of 55% Merlot, 35% Syrah and 10% Sangiovese, it is a IGT wine. The wine is aged 18 months in oak and then several months in bottle.
This wine was first produced in 2000 and about 3400 cases of the wine is produced. It is new at B.C. Liquor Stores, priced at $73.99 + tax
