How to Cook With a Mess Kit If you have a mess kit as part of your camping or emergency cooking gear, practice cooking with it so you will know how on the trail. You can purify water or cook basic meals with a mess kit. Set your mess kit up with 2 rocks, and use a Fancy Heat, Sterno, or alcohol stove. Mess kits tend to be a bit less stable than other cook sets, so be careful not to spill!
