Every year, in a charming and almost magical atmosphere, Montepulciano is home to a challenging competition: an uphill wine-barrel race called Bravio.
Eight contrade (districts of the historical centre) compete in the Bravio delle Botti (Cagnano, Collazzi, Le Coste, Gracciano, Poggiolo, San Donato, Talosa e Voltaia). In order to win the painted cloth at stake, the contenders have to push a wine barrel of 80 kg uphill for more than 1 km.
Two strong “spingitori” (pushers) push the wine barrels along the evocative streets of the city centre up to the arrival point on the yard of the Duomo in Piazza Grande.
