Where to find the best food in Siena? How to escape the tourist hoards around the Duomo and the Campo of the Palio horse race? How to find an authentic local experience? And how to help a neighborhood to give work and pride to its most vulnerable citizens?
Il Ristorante “All’ Orto de’ Pecci” answers all these questions. Set in a large, grassy park, walking distance from the center of Siena, this restaurant is an oasis in a beautiful medieval city plagued by over tourism.
If you want a truly immersive experience come to this restaurant with a mission of giving work to individuals living with mental illness and addiction and re-entering society after incarceration. This is the ultimate in responsible travel.
Run by the non-profit La Proposta Cooperativa Sociale Onlus, the mission creates NO trade-offs for you as a visitor. The food is affordable AND amazing. The staff are super friendly. The chef changes the menu daily and uses organic and local ingredients that reflect the season and the bounty of their own Medieval garden. The employees tend the garden with care and grow vegetables and herbs that Siena’s people would have eaten in Medieval times when the city was founded.
The restaurant has seating in the park, on a patio under vines, in a shaded outdoor tent, and indoors. They are open all year.
How can you help this local cause? EAT HERE! The restaurant prefers customers to donations because the mission is about putting people to work in rewarding positions that give them hope and confidence. They need your patronage anytime, but especially in the winter months.
There is limited seating, so please make a reservation. Much of the staff speaks English.Tel. +39 (0)577 222201.

About Us
We’re Emre and Maia, food lovers and travelers with a combined total of five passports. We make videos about local, authentic, and immersive experiences in Europe. We’re multi-linguists who love to engage with local people in their own language, while we spend our gap year being curious about everything!
Beautiful Italy launched our trip, where we dedicate a month to each of our stays. Longing for simplicity and freedom, we sold our house, put our remaining possessions in storage, and set out with one suitcase and a carry-on each to practice our version of slow travel.
We believe slow travel is a mindset that works whether you have a few days or a whole year. When it comes down to it, slow travel is really about being in the moment. Taking in all the details, being open to opportunities, and following your passions and whims.
Though we often give you our opinion as a starting point, we hope our videos inspire you to make travel your own. If the slow travel mindset led you to a great and unexpected discovery, please tell us about it! We love to hear success stories!
We like to keep it real. We did not receive, nor do we ask for compensation from any of the enterprises mentioned in this video.
