As a black solo woman traveler in Italy, I enjoyed my experiences in Rome and Florence. The biggest lesson I learned was to never depend on others for directions. People in Rome gave horrible directions so I stopped asking and figured out my way while making beautiful discoveries. My gut told me when to get off the bus, observations guided me, and instincts kept me aware. I was proud maneuvering street alleys and buses.

๐ดROME UPDATE: It is officially illegal to sit on the Spanish Steps in Rome. A new ordinance went into effect on July 8, 2019 and people caught sitting, eating, or drinking on the steps can face fines of up to $400 euro ($450). In addition, the ordinance applies to the Trevi Fountain and other popular city sites.
