Somos is the passion project turned full scale wine adventure from two enthusiastic young winemakers – one Australian and one Mexican – both looking to make interesting and contemporary wines from McLaren Vale. Benjamin Caldwell and Mauricio Ruiz Cantu are the creative duo behind this exciting project, which is focussed on ‘alternative’ varieties from sustainably managed vineyards – varieties like Aglianico, Vermentino, Cortese and other Italian wonders!
These unique wines are made with a deft touch, the resulting styles perfumed and balanced, bursting with energy and personality. Just minuscule volumes are produced, meaning each wine is very limited, but there is great fun and exciting drinking to be had across the Somos range!
Naranjito, meaning the Little Orange, is a skin-contact white wine made from 100% biodynamically-farmed Verdelho from a small vineyard in McLaren Flat. It’s a vibrant orange in colour, with a little classic cloudiness from being neither un-fined nor unfiltered for maximum flavour! There is so much going on in the glass: there are gorgeous flavours of gingernut biscuits and spiced apricot jam, with layer upon layer of tangerine, mandarin and spice. Acidity is in excellent balance for juiciness and then there’s a lick of tannin to finish off. Intriguing, summery and totally smashable!
