Demonstrators, including members of trade unions and left-wing movements, marched with signs and banners denouncing the Roman government and criticising the fact that between 10,000 and 15,000 requests for evictions could be carried out this year.

According to Maura Zacchi, a teacher and member of the School of Donato in Rome, one of the priority evictions that could take place in the coming weeks includes a residential building with 450 people, 150 families, and inhabitants of 27 different nationalities.

The movements criticise the government for not considering the delicate situation due to the pandemic.

“The pandemic has aggravated the situation and the measures undertaken by this government are insufficient,” said Michelangelo Giglio of the ASIA USB union in Rome.

“There are resources linked to COVID and the new generation European recovery plan, we believe they should be allocated to public housing policies,” said Paolo Di Vetta, from the Right to Housing Movement.
