Today we are in the heart of the Maremma Livornese, in Tuscany. Blown by the breezes of the Tyrrhenian Sea, we fly over the last offshoots of the ‘Colline Metallifere’ (metalliferous hills) which surround one of the most renowned production-areas for red wine: Bolgheri Sassicaia. The rocky soils, rich in ‘galestro’ and limestone, cover an area of 75 hectares and their altitude ranges between 30 and 330 meters.
Born in the Tenuta San Guido in the early 1900s, spurred by the intuition of Marchese Incisa della Rocchetta and the great oenologist Giacomo Tachis, Sassicaia has been considered an iconic wine since its very first commercial release in 1968.
Originally classified as “Vino da Tavola” (table wine, the lowest category in the quality pyramid), today it is the only Italian wine to which an exclusive DOC has been dedicated: a “monopole”, as the French would say. Today it appears in the Power100, the Liv-ex 2021 prestigious list which features Bolgheri Sassicaia at the 8th (and the 1st place among Italian wines).
