The story of Journey & Discovery Italian Pinot Grigio is written in the soils of the Rubicone sub-region of Romagna, just over the border from the Veneto, where the vast majority of Italian Pinot Grigio is planted. The Pinot Grigio producing areas of the Veneto are practically a mono-varietal growing zone, where, since the 1970’s, producers have sought to capitalize on the grape’s ascending popularity by planting it on virtually every square inch of available land. Unfortunately, this has led to a dilution of quality, as, like any wine terroir, only certain soils and aspects are conducive to fine wine production. Rubicone, on the other hand, is a complex, heterogeneous terroir, and when our winery partners decided to plant Pinot Grigio grapes in this beautiful region, they knew that they must be incredibly selective in terms of site. In order for the grapes to both ripen fully but also retain the vital natural acidity that gives Pinot Grigio its characteristic zip, three sites were chosen, each with unique environmental factors that lead to vastly different attributes in the finished wines.
