What do you get if you cross the world-beating wine knowledge of Italy’s Tuscany with never-say-die Aussie determination? The answer would be something along the lines of Babo – a small, dedicated winery committed to combining the best of Italy with the best of Australia. Babo is run by Justin Bubb, who cut his teeth in Barolo and Chianti, and picked up the local love for superb, complex red wines, packed with character and expression. After living in Chianti for several years, he now makes wine from there as well as Sicily and the Veneto.

Today, Babo is run by Justin and his two best mates, who have sourced the finest fruit from vineyards in these regions, and continue to impress year on year with the quality and authenticity of their produce. Quality Italian wines, born from over a decade of experience on the land, with a modern and fresh bent, perfect for the Australian climate and temperament.

This is a little reminiscent of the great rosés of Provence, albeit made from Sangiovese and from Tuscany! Pale in colour but big in refreshment, there’s lots happening here – aromas of unripe apricot, lemon zest, rose petal and fennel. Some sour cherry on the palate, with really bouncy acidity. A hint of bitter almond on the finish wraps things up nicely – very good!
