Rome Italy The Colosseum Norwegian Jade 12 Day Mediterranean Cruise Escorted Tour Colosseum Rome Italy Arch of Constantine Ancient Battle Ground The home of Ancient Roman Gladiators the Colosseum in Rome Italy and the Arch of Constantine beside the Palatine Hill is an easy day visit if you are a cruise ship passanger like I was on Norwegian Cruise Lines. I was on the Norwegian Jade cruise ship and we were picked up right at our exit ramp We had our own clean, quiet, air conditioned bus, our own tour guide and I had no worries about getting there, where to park, the admission fees and how to get back on time to the ship for departure.
Once at the Colosseum we were free to go wherever we wanted and after about 90 mins or so, we were ready to move on. The structure was built between 72 AD and 80 AD and it held between 50,000 and 80,000 people at it prime.
Rome once had about 1 million people living there at the height of the Roman Empire, but by the 1300’s there were only about 50,000 left. The Colosseum was abandonded and fell into disrepair. By the 1700’s it had been quarried for it’s stone, brass fittings and marble. There was vegitation everywhere including trees growing in the catacombs and seating area. But by the 1800’s the industrial revolution started to create a new class of people who were tourists looking to see new things in person like ancient Roman structures. So the Colosseum became popular a site to see and it was cleaned up and restoration began to happen.

Today the Colosseum has over 4 million visitors a year and the funding from tourist admissions helps to fund it’s continued restoration. But time and wear and tear do take their toll on the structure, so get there while you still can see it. It is a cool thing to see in person.
